GitHub rival Google Code will officially shut down on January 25, 2016, announced the Mountain View Company via its official Open Source blog. Google has now disabled new project creation on Google Code, and said the hosting service that made its official debut in 2006 will close 10 months from now in January.

According to Google, its decision to call the curtains on its ambitious web hosting service that started long ago when the likes of GitHub were not even around was due to the fact that "many projects had moved away from Google Code to those other systems (GitHub and Bitbucket bloom) leaving behind a growing share of spamming or abusive projects on the service."

"As developers migrated away from Google Code, a growing share of the remaining projects were spam or abuse. Lately, the administrative load has consisted almost exclusively of abuse management. After profiling non-abusive activity on Google Code, it has become clear to us that the service simply isn't needed anymore." said Google.

The company has now disabled new project creation and urged developers/coders to move their projects off Google Code for which it is providing link to migration tools. The company has also said that it will help coders in migrating their projects to other hosts over the course of next three months.

According to the company, the Google Code service will be read-only by August 24 2015. However, users can view project source, issues, and wikis during this period. Moreover users will be able to download a 'tarball' of project source, issues, and wikis throughout the rest of 2016.

That said, the company has ensured support for Git and Gerrit hosting for projects such as Android and Chrome will continue as also mirrors of projects like Eclipse, kernel.org and others.
