There are two true flagship that have been launched at MWC this year,
 at least the two have been much awaited by the Android users. One is 
the Samsung Galaxy S6 and its Edge variant. We covered both in a lot of 
detail on Monday. The second is HTC One M9, the new flagship phone from 
Taiwanese manufacturer. 
HTC One M9 replaces the HTC One M8 in the 
company's lineup. But it is a very incremental update, at least as far 
as smartphones go. The design of the M9 and M8 is exactly the same. In 
fact, you put both of them together most users will find it hard to tell
 the differences in the looks between the two. 
This is both a good
 thing and bad. It is good because the HTC One M8 has a fantastic 
design. And so does the M9. It uses a well-crafted and polished metal 
body with rounded edges. It is also fairly compact and fits well in 
hands. But as much as we like the design of the M9 (and the M8) we can't
 help feel that it is also stale. HTC is using this design for almost 
three years now. The HTC One (which launched in 2013) had a similar 
design. Then it was tweaked for the M8 and now with M9 the design 
changes - like squarish camera lens unlike round one on the M8- are so 
subtle that most people won't notice them.

 fact that HTC uses the same design for the M8 Eye and may use it again 
for the rumoured slower variant of the M8 also adds to the feeling that 
there is not much unique about the M9. 
HTC also doesn't help much 
here. The new phone comes with hardware upgrades but they too are 
modest. The performance was never an issue for the HTC One M8 and it is 
not an issue for the HTC One M9. When we tried the device we found it 
fast and extremely responsive. With Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, which is 
the latest and greatest processor from the chip company, inside the M9, 
it deals with apps and games with ease and without showing any lag. 
Scrolling is smooth and so is switching between tasks. 
Sense, the 
user interface that runs on top of the Android Lollipop in HTC Phones, 
continues to be a joy to use. Although here too, you won't much 
differences between the Sense running on the M8 and the user interface 
on the M9 
But there is one area where we did not find any 
improvement and that is screen. The M9 comes with a 5-inch screen with 
1080p resolution. The screen is sharp and vibrant but it is not the 
league of what is available on phones like the Galaxy S6.

 too has been changed. Unlike the ultrapixel camera in the M8 the M9 
comes with a regular camera on the rear. It is a 20MP camera and while 
we will have more to say about it when the devices launch in India, from
 some of the photos we clicked with it in the dimly-lit demo zone we get
 the impression that it is a very capable camera. Although it may not 
turn out to be as good as the one in the iPhone 6 or the Galaxy S6. 
However, HTC has said that currently camera software on the M9 is not 
final and performance will be better with updated software. 
 
Of
 course, there is a lot more to HTC M9 than what we can cover in first 
impressions. But for that we will need to spend more time with the 
device, something we will possibly do when it launches in India.

 now, we can say that it seems to be a rather incremental - but solid - 
update to the M8. It doesn't dazzle (anymore) because of its rather old -
 but still awesome - design. But it seems that when it comes to 
providing good smartphone experience, the One M9 is going to be as 
impressive (even more on aspects like camera) as the One M8. </div>

BlackBerry is trying hard to keep its neck out of water, the
Canadian smartphone maker had released the BlackBerry Passport last year in an
attempt to re-invent the smartphone industry. The phone was well received by
the critics but failed to make an impact in the market. Now BlackBerry has
teased us with another unique looking device that has not been officially
confirmed but looks a lot like the decade-old slider phone with a bigger, better,
and brighter screen.</div>

In the BlackBerry event at Mobile World Congress, the
company's President of Devices and Emerging Solutions, Ron Louks pulled out a
prototype handset that had the classic slider form factor. The phone seemed to
feature a dual curve display along with the BlackBerry 10 keyboard. The curve
display indicates Samsung's involvement with the coming smartphone. The keyboard was placed under the screen in
the same way a slider phone accommodates the keyboard.</div>

The device has not been given any name yet but since it has
already been displayed at the MWC it might make it to the commercial market by
the end of this year. The curved screen on the phone sure looks uber cool  but it will definitely make the device
uber-expensive too. BlackBerry still has a hold on a tiny but loyal market and
this phone will cater to that minute fraction of consumers.</div>

In the late 2014 when Samsung released its next Galaxy Note phablet, 
just like it had done in 2013 and 2012, the Korean company deviated 
somewhat from the past. It announced not one version of the device but 
two. The normal version was, well, the normal one. Called the Galaxy 
Note 4, it was an iterative update of the Galaxy Note 3. But the second 
version was unique. It was so unique that there were rumours it might 
not even see wide availability in the market. 
Called Galaxy Note 
Edge, this was Samsung's first phone or phablet with a curved screen. In
 fact, unlike the LG Flex 2, which can be called the first smartphone 
with a curved screen even though in terms of functionality it is no 
different from a regular phone, the Edge was "curved" in the real sense. 
The
 Edge is available in India. We have already review the Galaxy Note 4, 
which is the normal version of Samsung's best phablet. It is one cool 
phablet. The Edge is more or less similar. Yet, there is something 
special about it. 
Before you read further, let's quickly make one 
thing clear: The Galaxy Note 4 is a better value for money if you are 
looking to buy the best phablet in the market. The Edge is expensive. It
 is a niche product. But it is a piece of future that you can carry in 
your pocket right now. It doesn't make sense from the value-for-money 
angle. But it is something you will want if you are really after a 
unique phone. 
As to know why and how it is unique and if that at all affects the functionality of the device, read on... Design and build quality

The
 Galaxy Note Edge looks almost similar to the Note 4. And it has the 
same build quality. Unlike the previous Note devices, the new one comes 
with a metal frame around it, which makes it feel sturdier and gives it 
somewhat more premium looks. 
Though in the grand scheme of things 
that is not saying much because compared to devices like the Apple 
iPhone 6 Plus, the Note Edge doesn't look all that polished. The back 
cover of the device is made of plastic that has faux leather look. The 
back cover has matte finish and hence feels better than glossy plastic 
when you hold the phone but compared to some other devices in this price
 range, it is to safe that there is nothing special about the design of 
the Edge. 
The build quality is, however, impeccable. The device 
feels sturdy in hands. The buttons are firm and fit snugly in their 
sockets and the finishing is top class. 
Where the Edge differs 
from the Note 4 and other phones is on its right side. There are no 
buttons on the right edge. Instead, this is where the screen subtly 
curves to meet the back cover. In terms of design, this doesn't make any
 difference. The feel of the device in hand is similar to what you get 
with the Note 4 or any other well-designed large screen phone. 
 
Screen

 Galaxy Note devices have always come with extraordinarily good screens.
 The Galaxy Note Edge is the same. The screen is also one area where the
 Note Edge is a lot different from the Galaxy Note 4. First of all there
 is difference in numbers. The Note 4 has a 5.7-inch screen while the 
Edge has a 5.6-inch screen. The Edge also has a higher resolution 
screen. It sports a resolution of 1600 X 2560 pixels. The extra pixel 
width is because of the extra width added by the curved screen. 
Theoretically,
 the Note Edge has two screens. One is the normal flat screen and that 
has a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. The other is the curved part of 
the screen, which is treated as the second screen. It has a resolution 
of 160 x 2560 pixels. 
The phone uses a SuperAMOLED screen. In 
terms of colours, contrast and brightness this is a flawless display. 
The colours are slightly oversaturated -- expected from the AMOLED panel
 -- but due to their richness they make the content pop. That is a good 
thing for users. Software

The
 software part of the Note Edge is a bitter-sweet story. The phone uses 
Google Android 4.4 aka KitKat, which is customised by Samsung with its 
own TouchWiz users interface. 
Either you will hate Touchwiz or you
 will be contend enough to live with it. But you won't love it, even 
though it packs in some useful tweaks and apps. The problem with 
Touchwiz is that even though it is very functional, it no longer looks 
good. This is especially true when you compare it to the stock Android 
Lollipop or iOS 8. Even the customised Android used by other 
manufacturers, like HTC or Sony, looks much better than what Samsung is 
putting out in its phones nowadays. 
The other problem with 
TouchWiz is that it just doesn't feel all that smooth. There are 
occasions when lags are visibly. And this has nothing to do with the 
hardware of the phone. Whatever performance issues are -- such as 
scrolling through photo gallery -- they are because something is amiss 
in the software. 
That said, there are lots of good things in 
TouchWiz. For example, the health app, which uses the multi-functional 
sensor placed under the rear camera module, is a joy to use. The sensor 
is also mostly accurate when it comes to checking heart rate and the 
health app works with the accelerometer in the phone in such way that it
 tracks the physical activity of a user as well as a dedicated fitness 
band. 
Then there are features that are specific to Note series. 
The Edge comes with a stylus. This stylus uses a lot of special apps 
like S Pen to offer functionality that is not available in any other 
phablet.

The Edge factor

What
 about the curved part of the screen? As we noted earlier, this part of 
the screen is treated separately most of the time. The Note Edge comes 
with new Settings option from where you can control the curved screen. 
This part of the screen can be used to keep essential app icons, see 
notifications including weather info, display special text (it could be 
your name, for example) and access quick settings like torch. 
The 
curved screen can also be used by apps creatively. At the moment, not 
many such apps utilise the feature. But one example is Samsung's camera 
app. This app uses the main screen as the viewfinder while the shutter 
release button (camera button) has been moved to the curved part. 
Overall,
 we found the curved screen to be a novelty feature. Yes, it adds a 
little bit of functionality but that functionality in itself doesn't 
actually enhances the Smartphone experience in a significant way. But we
 must say these are early days for such screens. As more and more 
smartphones start including them, app developers and software developers
 will start to find unique uses for them. That ways, the Note Edge, with
 its curved screen feels like a device that has something extra in it. 
This something extra may not be vital to the overall experience, but it 
sure adds to the appeal of the device. 
Performance

Overall,
 performance of the Edge is very good. Though that is not a surprise 
considering the hardware it packs inside its body. The phone is powered 
by Qualcomm Snapdragon  805 processor running at 2.7GHz. It also has 3GB
 RAM and 32GB internal storage. 
Additional, there are sensors. For
 example, the sensor under the rear camera can measure heart rate as 
well as stress level and oxygen level. The last two seem gimmicks. The 
phone also has a fingerprint scanner that can be used to lock and unlock
 the phone. But it doesn't work as well as the fingerprint sensor in the
 iPhone 6. 
General performance of the phone is good. As noted 
earlier, except some occasional lag in scrolling through photo gallery 
or contacts, everything is fast fastfast on this phone. High-end games 
run well and the phone doesn't heat as much as other high-end devices 
like the iPhone 6. GPS works well. the speaker, which has a vent on the 
back cover, is loud enough. It is not in the class of HTC's Boomsound 
but it is quite loud. 
The audio quality during calls is 
impeccable. Also, the network performance is fantastic and we rarely saw
 weak signals or poor internet speed on the phone. 
Camera 
 
The
 Edge comes with a 16-megapixel rear camera and a 3.7-megapixel front 
camera. The camera performance is one of the strong points of the Edge. 
In fact, it is as good as the camera performance of the Note 4, which 
means it is among the best we have seen in a smartphone. To know more

Battery

The
 Note series devices have always offered good battery. The Note Edge 
doesn't match the kind of battery life that devices like the Note 3 and 
Note 2 offered but despite its powerful hardware and a high-resolution 
screen, it lasts around a day. We used the device with 2 email accounts,
 2 social media accounts, over an hour of browsing, some YouTube 
streaming, around half an hour of gaming, over an hour of calls and 
little photography and the device consistently lasted between 14 to 15 
hours. This is with fairly heavy use. If you are not online 24 X 7, you 
will be able to get battery life of around 18 to 20 hours from the Edge.

As
 we noted in the beginning, the Galaxy Note Edge is not a value for 
money device. If you just want a cool phablet, you can go for the Galaxy
 Note 4. The only extra bit that the Edge offers is novelty factor that 
its curved screen adds. This is something unique to it. And even though 
it may not a particularly useful add-on, seeing your name scroll by the 
side of the phone in a stylish font is something that no other phone 
offers yet. 
As a device, the Edge is a really good phablet. But whether its novelty features are worth Rs.64,990 or not is something that only you can decide.</div>

Chinese tech major Lenovo has unveiled a string of new devices at the
 on-going MWC 2015 event being held in Barcelona, chiefly in their 
smartphone portfolio. The company introduced the new VIBE Shot and A7000
 smartphones along with the Pocket Projector on Monday. 
 
The Lenovo
 Vibe Shot, as the name indicates is a camera-centric device and by the 
looks of it it's hard to discern it from a point-and-shoot camera, 
especially from the rear.  
 
The Vibe Shot features a 5-inch full-HD
 IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with a 1080x1920 pixels resolution that 
roughly translates to 441ppi. It is powered by a 1.7 GHz quad-core 
Qualcomm MSM8939 Snapdragon 615 CPU coupled with 3GB RAM. It comes with 
32 GB of internal storage expandable up to 128GB via micro-SD.  
 
The
 device runs Android 5.0.2 Lollipop out-of-the-box with the company's 
VIBE UI on top. It sports a 16MP rear camera with optical image 
stabilization, autofocus and triple-LED flash. There's also an 8MP front
 camera on-board the device. The device is backed by a non-removable 
2,900mAh battery. 
 
The VIBE Shot will be available starting in June at a price tag of $349. 
 
The
 Lenovo A7000 on the other hand focuses on churning out good quality 
sound by being the world's first smartphone to pack in the Dolby ATMOS 
surround sound feature.   
 
The A7000 features a 5.5-inch HD IPS 
capacitive touchscreen with a 720x1280 pixels resolution that roughly 
translates to 267ppi. It is powered by a 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek 
MT6752 CPU coupled with 2GB RAM. It comes with 8GB of internal storage 
expandable up to 32GB via micro-SD.  
 
The device runs Android 5.0 
Lolipop and supports 4G LTE. It sports an 8 MP autofocus with dual LED 
flash along with a 5MP snapper. It is backed by a removable 2800mAh 
battery 
The A7000 will be available in March at a price of $169. 
 
The
 Lenovo Pocket Projector essentially is a projector meant for Android 
devices that supersizes multimedia content on the device and projects it
 up to 110-inch on screen. It is compatible with any Miracast or 
DLNA-enabled Android, Windows 8.1 or iOS device. 
It comes with a
