Asus Fonepad 7 review: Neither the best nor the worst

At a time when the line between tablets and smartphones is thinning 
due to the entry of phablets in the market, Asus Fonepad 7 FE171CG 
appears to be another shot at the select consumer. The tablet seems to 
be a strong contender in its price range, at least on the paper, with 
2GB RAM and an Intel Atom Z2520 processor. <br />

The Fonepad 7 (FE171CG) was announced globally in January. But in India it was launched just recently at a price of <span class="rupee">R<span>s.</span></span>10,999.
 There are not many tablets in this range that also offer calling 
facility with 3G-enabled dual-SIMs. But this one does. Coupled with 
decent hardware, this could be a good option for a lot of tablet buyers.
 It all depends on how it performs and whether all the features it packs
 in work as advertised or not. <br />
So let's find out if the Fonepad 7 is worth its price or not.<br />
<br />
<b>Design and build quality</b><br />

For
 its new tablet, Asus continues to use the design language that it 
debuted earlier. This means the Fonepad 7 (FE171CG) looks almost similar
 to previous Asus tablets like the FE170 and the FE380. This is both 
good and bad. It is good because the design itself is pretty nice. It 
works well enough to make the tablet a decent-looking device. But it is 
bad because it is also boring. Asus is repeating this design in tablet 
after tablet and that means there is nothing unique about it. <br />
<br />
Though
 on the back of the Fonepad 7 there are some differences. For example, 
the new tablet comes with matte finish on the back cover. Then the 
bronze colour on our review unit added to the style -- though on 
Flipkart the tablet is available only in black and white colours -- and 
made it look classier than its peers. <br />
<br />
The volume and power 
buttons are on the top right side of the tablet, and on the left it has 
slots for SIM cards which is covered by a flap. The overall design is 
seamless and nothing seems out of place. The only bit that could have 
been better is the port for the microSD card, which looks ugly. It is 
also a port without any flap and we fail to understand why Asus has left
 the memory card uncovered. <br />
<br />
With dimensions of 
196x110.6x7.9mm and weight of 280 grams, the Fonepad 7 is neither too 
heavy nor too large. The compact size means you can use it for calling 
purposes in emergency. Though we don't suggest you use it as your 
regular communication device like a phone. The fashion police may not 
like it.<br />
<br />
Overall, the tablet has a decent design and build. 
You can hold it comfortably for hours. Due to the matte finish, smudges 
are not visible on the tablet. However, the back cover is prone to 
scratches. Also, it is not a unique design at all.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Display</b><br />

 tablet has a 7-inch display with 600 X 1024 pixels resolution. In terms
 of resolution, this is definitely not the best display in the price 
range. The Dell Venue 7 gives a better pixel density at the resolution 
of 800X1280 pixels and the same goes for the Fonepad 7 ME175CG. Both the
 tablets are priced lower than the one in question.<br />

We also 
found the tablet's brightness to be insufficient even at full bar, which
 makes it hard to use under the sun. However, the screen displays decent
 colours and contrast in normal light. Unlike the back cover that 
handles oily fingers and survive without any smudges, the screen is a 
fingerprint magnet. After the day-long use, you will need to thoroughly 
wipe it. <br />
<br />
<b>Camera</b><br />

 tablet sports 8-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel secondary 
camera. The images that we clicked again proved that the number of 
megapixel is not everything. A camera needs to have a better sensor. And
 Asus Fonepad 7 doesn't seem to have one that is in any way above 
average.<br />
<br />
The images that we clicked with the Fonepad 7 in 
daylight seemed to be quite good. Though they were a bit grainy and 
lacked details when seen after zooming to their full size. <br />
<br />
The
 performance in poor light, however, was really bad. The photos taken in
 low light, or in night, turned out be unusable. These images were full 
of noise and lacked proper contrast. <br />
<br />
Compared to a phone, the
 camera in Fonepad 7 is below average in terms of performance. But for a
 tablet, we can call it respectable. When the light is good, it can 
capture some really crisps shots. <br />
The camera app on Fonepad 7
 is also entirely different from the Android camera app, it comes with a
 hoard of features and modes. But most of these features are unlikely to
 be used often.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Software</b><br />
<br />
The
 tablet comes with its own Zen user interface (UI), which is layered on 
top of Android 4.3 KitKat. Though this is an Android tablet, it is a 
universe apart in terms of UI looks and feel. Those who have a taste for
 pure Android will probably hate the Zen UI. <br />
<br />
Asus has added 
features and apps that may come handy to a loyal Asus user. Though most 
users are likely to ignore them. The tablet comes with over a dozen 
pre-installed apps, and unfortunately, none of them can be uninstalled. 
These, we believe, are unnecessary apps. They won't be used by most of 
users. They just make the device feel bloated, take up hardware 
resources like RAM and storage and eventually slow down the tablet. <br />
<br />
Though
 there are a few things such as in-built app-lock,  
notification-cum-settings menu and widget-laden lock screen that are 
somewhat useful. <br />
<br />
<b>Performance</b><br />

The
 tablet comes with the Intel Atom Z2520 processor clocked at 1.20GHz. 
The device has 2GB RAM. This looks impressive on paper. Though the 
performance is kind of mixed bag. <br />
The device showed almost no
 lag during normal usage, but when put to its paces with some heavy 
multitasking and gaming, it showed slight lag. Also, playing a video or 
games for long durations -- around 20 to 30 minutes or more -- makes the
 device somewhat uncomfortably hot under its back cover. <br />
<br />
In 
fact, gaming is not an area where this tablet shines. When games were 
run at their maximum graphics settings, we found the frame rate less 
than perfect. There was lag and evident dropped frames. Reducing the 
graphics settings also reduces the lag but it doesn't entirely go away. <br />
We
 also feel that Asus needs to fine-tune the software on this tablet. 
There were occasions when we found that the device got hot even with 
normal use or while clicking multiple photos or recording videos. This 
was unusual, especially for a tablet. <br />
<br />
Still, overall we found
 the Fonepad 7 to be fairly decent in the performance department. Even 
with multiple apps running in the background, the screen was receptive 
to touch. Though here too we found some software bugs. For example, 
there were occasions when opening the notification shade was slow, as if
 the touch response wasn't registered. This was very random and 
definitely not a deal breaker but we did come across it. <br />
<br />
The 
tablet has two SIM card slots, and both are 3G-enabled. You can make 
calls using the Fonepad 7 but while holding it against your cheek, you 
are going to look a little ridiculous. The speaker placement is also 
somewhat awry. Even when we placed it directly over the ear, we found 
varying sound levels during a call. The connectivity is not all that 
rosy. The voice during calls cracked at times even with full bars.<br />
<br />
If
 you are hoping to use the calling feature on this tablet, we suggest 
you use it with a pair of earphones. The experience with earphones is 
much better. <br />
Overall, the performance is decent for the price
 tag. It worked smoothly in day-to-day use. The gaming is, however, a 
weak point. <br />
<br />
<b>Battery</b><br />

 Asus Fonepad 7 packs in a 3950mAh non-removable battery, which we can 
consider a pretty decent one. On normal to light usage it gave us a 
battery backup of up to 20-26 hours, which is more than what we 
expected. It ran for about 6-7 hours while we were engaged in gaming for
 about 30 minutes, browsing Facebook for about 1 hour, calls for about 
30 minutes, etc. <br />
<br />
Overall we feel that the battery life on Fonepad 7 is decent, especially if you are not going to play too many games. <br />
<br />
<b>Should you buy it?</b><br />

 the Fonepad 7 FE171CG is a decent tablet but not something that we can 
consider best in class. It is not going to dazzle you. For gamers, it is
 not the right tablet. <br />
<br />
But for everyone else it is a decent 
option. Unless you are looking for iPad-class performance or a tablet on
 which you can play Real Racing whole day, you can consider the Fonepad 
7. We can recommend this tablet to all those who need one for surfing 
internet, listening to music, light reading, light gaming, and calling 
once in a while.<br />

In the last two years the demand for phablets aka the large screen 
has gone through the roof. People just love these devices, especially in
 India. Yet, Microsoft, which is trying to push its Windows Phone in a 
market dominated by Android and Apple's iOS, hasn't been particularly 
active in this segment.<br />
So, far it has launched two phablets 
-- the Lumia 1520 and 1320. And that happened in October 2013 at the 
last Nokia World in Abu Dhabi. <br />
<br />
Now, it is making a comeback 
with the Lumia 640 XL. The company knows that the real growth is in the 
mainstream market and hence positioning the 640 XL as a phablet for 
budget shopper. <br />
<br />
The 640 XL is big - 5.7-inches to be precise. But Microsoft has its work cut out as under <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>20,000
 these days it is possible to get a OnePlus One, which basically sports 
flagship class hardware. The Redmond-based company will have you believe
 that the combination of its own hardware, services and software stack 
make for a compelling story. We have been testing the phone for a week 
or so, read on to find out if it's worth your money. <br />

<h2>
Design and build quality</h2>

That said, it is a massive phone which is not easy to 
carry around. Microsoft's industrial designers have created a pleasing 
design with lots of straight lines, but this also means that from the 
sides, the phone has sharp edges that will dig into your palms, making 
it uncomfortable to hold. <br />
Of course, at 9mm and 171 grams, 
this is a big phone by any metric, so one handed usage is next to 
impossible. Unless, of course, you have abnormally large hands. <br />
<br />
The
 good news is that the overall quality of the product feels first class.
 You don't get the feeling that you are using a cheap product as the fit
 and finish is just fabulous. This is something we have come to expect 
of Microsoft and it doesn't disappoint us. <br />
<br />
There are some 
minor design blemishes though. For instance, the rear camera has a minor
 bulge which adds to the thickness of the product and the screen is 
surrounded by large borders. <br />
We also feel that the borders 
flanking the top and bottom of the display could be smaller, 
particularly as this phone has software based buttons, not capacitive 
hardware keys. That could have also reduced the size of the phone. <br />

Display</h2>

 big 5.7-inch display of the Lumia 640 XL dominates the fascia of the 
product and also lends it the 'XL' nomenclature. Thankfully, Microsoft 
has decided to offer a 720p HD IPS panel with its ClearBlack polariser. 
This means that the display has natural looking colours, good viewing 
angles when the phone is viewed off-axis and decent levels of 
brightness, especially when viewed under direct sunlight. </div>

Yes, 
the display has a rather low resolution considering the size of the 
screen, but it appears to be a big improvement from the type of displays
 Microsoft has shipped in the past on phones like the Lumia 530 and 
Lumia 535. The pixel density converts to 259 pixels per inch. <br />
In
 the display settings, you can also manually calibrate the display of 
the Lumia 640 XL to your liking. There are some presets, but we 
preferred to calibrate it on our own. Out of the box, the display had a 
warmer/yellowish tinge, which we did not like. <br />
<br />
In the larger 
scheme of things, we are glad to report that Microsoft has shipped a 
good display in the 640 XL, which can handle any task the average 
smartphone user will throw at the device. This means it is good for 
watching videos, reading text or even getting work done. In fact, we can
 say that the extra wide display particularly is helpful while managing 
Excel sheets or composing large Word documents. <br />

Camera</h2>

The
 one area where Microsoft's Lumia smartphones have always held an edge 
over Android smartphones is in the area of imaging. The Lumia 640 XL 
sure does come with some impressive imaging hardware on the back. It has
 a 13-megapixel camera with 1/3 inch sensor, a f/2.0 aperture and a 
focal length of 28mm. It even has optics from Carl Zeiss, something most
 phones in the price band can't hope to match. </div>

Does all this hardware pay dividends? In one word, yes. <br />
The
 Lumia has a great camera on the back. It works well in day time and 
night time though the images clicked in the evenings do show noise and 
are grainy. <br />
In daylight, the images have ample amount of 
detail and the colo<br />

urs are true to life. With the new Lumia Denim 
update, the phone also manages to take photos relatively quickly. Speed 
is still an issue, but it is not a deal breaker anymore. <br />
The 
camera is equally impressive in low-light scenarios as it can manage to 
cram in a lot of detail though this detail comes with dollops of noise 
that make the photos look too grainy. <br />
<br />
The great bit about 
Microsoft's Lumia smartphones is the Lumia camera app. The unique radial
 user interface allows the user to tweak each and every setting of the 
shot in a simple and intuitive way. This is very handy if you know your 
way around a digital camera as you can manipulate the setting to get 
even better results than the automatic setting. <br />
<br />
The Lumia 640
 XL also excels at shooting videos. It can shoot 1080p videos at 30 
frames per seconds. It largely takes shake-free videos with good quality
 audio. Its camera is also very good at automatically changing the focus
 as the user pans around while shooting videos.<br />

Even on the 
front, Microsoft has equipped the Lumia 640 XL with a wide angle 
5-megapixel sensor, which takes good selfies. More importantly, thanks 
to the wide-angle lens, you can fit in a lot in the frame while taking 
selfies.  So if you are gunning for something similar to the famous 
'Oscar Selfie' with 10 people in it the 640 XL may not be a bad choice. 
Trust us, it will do a better job than the Samsung Galaxy S5, which was 
used for the 'Oscar Selfie'. <br />

 is a weak point of Microsoft's Lumia phones. Windows Phone, which 
powers the Lumia 640 XL just can't match Android and iOS in terms of 
quality and quantity when it comes to apps. Yes, it can be argued that 
Microsoft has enough apps in its store to fulfil the needs of most 
people, but their quality is a different story altogether. </div>

Even 
if one takes a look at the Facebook and Twitter apps, then it is easy to
 realise the gulf in the quality and user experience offered by a 
Windows Phone app and an Android or iOS app. <br />
That said, at 
its heart Windows Phone remains a competent operating system. As always 
there are things that it does better than Android and there are things 
that Android does better than it. <br />
<br />
Largely, of all the 
operating systems in the market, Windows Phone is the simplest of the 
lot. With Windows Phone 8.1, it even gets an Android style notification 
shade. Its Start Screen is dynamic and is always bustling with 
information. There's no denying if you just work with basic apps, 
Windows Phone offers an enjoyable experience. <br />
<br />
However, it 
still does not play well with Google's popular services and neither has a
 virtual assistant that works in India. Hence, it is likely to be 
inferior for anyone coming from Android or iOS. <br />
That said, 
Microsoft's services are well integrated in the OS - so you get things 
like Skype, Office, Nokia Here maps with offline navigation and also a 
bunch of other third party apps. <br />
<br />
Microsoft, in fact, has 
preloaded a lot of stuff on the Lumia 640 XL. Out of the box, the phone 
comes preloaded with Food Panda, Book My Show, BBM, Gameloft, FitBit, 
Make my Trip, OLA Cabs, We Chat and Zomato. Most of these apps are 
essentials, so we are not classifying them as bloatware, however on a 
phone with just 8GB of onboard storage this was a little excessive. <br />
The
 good bit is that unlike Android, Microsoft allows the user to remove 
all preloaded apps. Nothing is forced upon the user. Users can also 
install apps on an SD card unlike Android. <br />
<br />
It is also worth 
keeping in mind that the phone will be upgradable to Windows 10 for the 
phone later in the year. This will add a host of new features to the 
phone including support for universal apps that will work across 
different types of devices. <br />
<br />
To its detriment, currently, its 
software is also not well customised for the large screen the phone 
offers. So there is no windowed multitasking paradigm and even the 
keyboard is not dynamic, offering a one-handed mode. Some of these 
features, however, are expected in the Windows 10 update. <br />
<br />
<h2>
Performance</h2>
By modern standards, the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is running on frugal 
hardware. It runs on an ageing Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, which 
hums along at 1.2GHz with four cores. It is coupled with 1GB RAM and 8GB
 of internal memory. There's also a microSD card slot with support for

The meagre hardware belies the 
performance offered by the Lumia 640 XL. It feels much faster than a 
phone running an ageing processor. Of course, Microsoft's code base for 
Windows Phone is different, and probably more optimised, than Android, 
which enables a smoother and faster experience on similar hardware. <br />

But
 just to be clear, we are no labelling the performance as earth 
shattering. The second-generation Moto G runs on similar hardware and we
 can say that the performance on it is close to what a user can get with
 the Lumia 640 XL. <br />
<br />
The phone can multitask well and at times we had more than 10 apps opened at the same time. The phone showed no signs of lags. <br />
<br />
In
 the longer run, however, performance could be an issue. Windows 10 will
 be a big update and it will be interesting to see how the phone 
performs. <br />
<br />
In terms of gaming, the quality of the graphics is 
not great. Using the Adreno 305 GPU, the phone offers average gaming 
experience. While there were no major frame rate issues, the quality of 
the graphics was certainly not what you'd expect of a phone costing so 
much. <br />
<br />
Network performance of the phone was fine and we did 
not face many dropped calls while testing the phone. We tested the 
device on a Vodafone network in Delhi NCR. It is also a dual-SIM phone 
with dual active functionality, which makes it more enticing. There's no
 4G LTE support, Microsoft will launch a separate 4G model of the same 
in India. <br />

 thing that impressed us the most about the Lumia 640 XL is the battery 
life. The 3,000mAh battery in combination with the rather frugal 
Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU converts to amazing battery life. On an 
average, the phone lasts in-excess of 28-30 hours. </div>

The phone 
never died within the 24 hour period and on one occasion we managed to 
use the phone two days at a stretch. Admittedly, during this 2 day 
stretch we did not use the Facebook app, which is a major source of 
notifications and often keeps a user glued to the screen. <br />
On 
average, our tests included 2 hours of phone calls, 2 email accounts, 2 
social networks, 15-20 photos shot with the phone's camera, 45 minutes 
of music streaming, 30 minutes of web browsing, and around 30 minutes of
 streaming videos on YouTube. We also played games like Asphalt 8 for 
long stretches. <br />

Should you buy it?</h2>

There
 are two ways to look at the Lumia 640 XL. It is a well-designed but 
somewhat underpowered phone. Or you can see it as a device punches above
 its weight despite its more humble hardware. <br />
The performance of 
the Lumia 640 XL is mostly adequate but we still feel hesitant in 
recommending a device with the Snapdragon 400 and 8GB internal storage 
at this price. <br />
<br />
That said, the performance of the 640 XL rear 
camera and battery is superb. In these two areas, no Android phone in 
the price bracket comes close. <br />
<br />
Then there is the Windows 
Phone operating system, which continues to hold back the phone. The apps
 on the OS aren't as good as Android or iOS and many services that are 
loved by users are not available. If you can live without the core 
Google experiences like good Gmail or Chrome experience, then the Lumia 
640 XL will pleasantly surprise you. If not, then you should give it a 
skip. <br />
In nutshell, the Lumia 640 XL is a solid budget phablet
 if you care for camera, battery and basic smartphone functionality. But
 this is not an Android phone and doesn't match the rich experience that
 a similarly-priced Lollipop or KitKat-powered phone can provide.</div>

In the last few years, cameras in smartphones have advanced by leaps 
and bounds. But this improvement is a result of incremental updates. The
 big updates have been few. Nokia did its bit to progress imaging, but 
apart from it no one is really reinventing the wheel.<br />

A couple of 
years ago a little known company called Lytro introduced light-field 
technology, which introduced refocussing capabilities in an image. HTC 
last year followed suit with a similar concept on the One (M8), but it 
failed to impress. Now Chinese smartphone vendor Huawei is making an 
attempt at reinventing the wheel with its Honor 6 Plus. The focus, pun 
intended, is again on the refocussing technology, which may help 
smartphone shooters get better bokeh in images. Huawei has made some 
lofty claims about the capabilities of the camera on Honor 6 Plus. We 
put the phone through the paces. Read on to find out if it's any good.<br />

Let's
 not beat around the bush. The Honor 6 Plus reminds us a lot of the 
iPhone 4. At the same time,  it borrows a number of design elements from
 Sony's Xperia Z3.<br />
<br />
It is amazing that we are still seeing phones 
that are inspired by the iPhone 4, which was launched way back in 2010. 
The Honor 6 Plus is certainly an attractive phone, but there's nothing 
original about the design. By this we mean you get a geometric metal 
frame sandwiched in glass on the both sides.<br />
<br />
Yes, it's slim at 
7.5mm and weighs 165 grams, which is fine for a 5.5-inch phablet, but 
the iPhone 4 design language does not convert to great ergonomics on a 
phone that's as big as the Honor 6 Plus. It's big and clunky to hold. 
Its sharp lines dig into the palms and generally the phone is not the 
most comfortable one to hold.<br />
<br />
If you are not careful chances are 
you may drop the phone. Considering the glass back, this does not bode 
well for the longevity of the phone.<br />
<br />
However, the build quality is
 strikingly good. It is absolutely exquisite. The fit and finish of 
everything from the buttons on the side to the SIM trays feels top notch
 - right up there with a phone like the iPhone.<br />
<br />
It's a dual-SIM 
phone, so it has twin trays. One tray is for a nano-SIM slot, which also
 doubles as a microSD card slot, while the other SIM slot is for 
microSIM.<br />
<br />
Overall, the phone has a great build quality. The design is neat, albeit a compromised and unoriginal one.<br />

Huawei
 is using a gorgeous 5.5-inch 1080p screen on the Honor 6 Plus. The 
company claims a 73.2 per cent screen to body ratio, which seems 
correct. Overall, we found the display to be of a very high standard.<br />
<br />
It
 shows rich and punchy colours, which pop out.  Brightness levels and 
viewing angles too are very good. Like Xiaomi, Huawei's use of excessive
 bright colours in the UI adds to the vibrance of the screen, which 
makes it look similar to AMOLED screens even though it uses a LCD panel.<br />
<br />
The
 screen is good for watching videos and as well shows crisp text. 
Moreover, its legibility under sunlight is decent, so one can actually 
get work done with this phone even in the searing and extremely bright 
sunlight.<br />

<span style="color: #134f5c;"><b>Camera</b></span></h2>

 Honor 6 Plus earns its, ahem, honour due to its camera. Or to be 
precise, the pair of stacked 8-megapixel sensors on the back that work 
in concert to provide refocussing capabilities like a Lytro camera.<br />

Using
 a wide aperture mode, on the Honor you can open up the aperture up to 
as wide as f/0.95, which ensures insane level of depth of field. This 
sounds a lot like the capabilities of HTC One (M8), which paired a 
4-Ultrapixel sensor with a depth sensor, however the results are 
completely different. And that is evident in the shot clicked with the 
Honor 6 Plus because it is capable of shooting some stunning shots.<br />
<br />
In
 the camera app there is a depth of field slider, which allows you to 
manually control the aperture, hence increasing or decreasing the 
'bokeh' effect to get the perfect shot. Of course, this is strictly 
meant for subjects that are not moving because the results will not be 
as nice if you are trying to shoot a moving vehicle.<br />
<br />
Even in the 
normal mode, the rear camera performs very well. It takes shots with 
lots of detail, accurate colours and minimal noise. In low light, the 
performance does not rival that of the iPhone 6, but here we have a 
camera which still does a darn good job.<br />
<br />
Thanks to the twin 
sensors, the Honor 6 Plus also captures large pixels. It has 1.98um 
pixels. The large size ensures decent low-light performance.<br />
<br />
Long 
story short, the Honour 6 Plus has a really nice camera. It may not 
compete with the iPhone 6 or the Lumia 1020, but it sure can hold its 
own against some of the Android flagships. In fact, if you look at the 
wide aperture mode, then the depth of field effects are almost like an 
DSLR with a prime lens.<br />
<br />
Of course, it is not perfect. In some 
cases when the focused subject is far, it distorts image as it is not 
able to resolve the information supplied by the twin lens.<br />
<br />
At the 
front there is an 8-megapixel sensor that takes some nice selfies. 
Importantly, on the top left corner, the camera instructs you to look 
into a small box, ensures that you are looking into the lens for the 
selfie, something that doesn't happen all the time. Often, the lens is 
not visible.<br />
<br />
The phone also shoots 1080p video, but the quality of
 videos is disappointing. There's a software based stabilisation mode, 
but it does not do a good job. While colours and focusing is fine, the 
footage is often shaky. The audio quality, however, is decent.<br />
<br />

The
 Honor 6 Plus runs on Android 4.4 KitKat running Huawei's Emotion UI 
3.0. Like other Chinese brands, the Honor has a UI that seems like a 
blend of what Apple's iOS offers and the capabilities one gets with 
Android. There is no separate app drawer. There is only a springboard of
 apps that is home to both widgets and app icons.<br />
<br />
It is a 
simple UI and most of the core apps are nicely redesigned. 
Interestingly, there is even a quick settings menu that launches from a 
bottom swipe. The notifications pane is also similar to iOS and overall 
if we had to compare it to an Android skin then we have to say it looks 
very similar to the UI on the Vivo X5 Max.<br />
<br />
Largely, the UI is 
simple and highly customisable as it supports themes. It also feels 
quite nimble in operating something that many of these custom Android 
implementations do not.<br />
<h2>
<span style="color: #134f5c;"><b>Performance</b></span></h2>

 Honor 6 Plus does not use processors from Qualcomm, Samsung, MediaTek 
or even Intel. It uses Huawei's own Hi-Silicon 925 SoC which is paired 
with 3GB of RAM. The phone also has 32GB of internal storage and a 
microSD card slot. Now, this chipset is an all Huawei solution based on 
an octa-core architecture with four ARM Cortex A15 cores and four ARM 
Cortex A7 cores.<br />
<br />
By modern standards this is not exactly 
revolutionary, but the performance of the phone is fantastic. We could 
multitask with much ease and could have more than 15 apps open without 
any stutters or lags. Navigation of the user interface was also silky 
smooth.<br />
<br />
The phone also ran pretty cool, so we don't have any concerns about it over heating.</div>

Call quality of the phone
 was fine. Our initial unit failed to recognise our nano-SIM for some 
reason, but the new unit performed decently. We did not face unexplained
 dropped calls as we tested the device on a Vodafone network in the 
National Capital Region. The Honor 6 Plus is a dual-SIM phone which 
supports 4G networks in the country, which just sweetens the deal.<br />
<h2>
<span style="color: #134f5c;"><b>Battery life</b></span></h2>

 from the camera, another highlight of this phone is its big 3,600mAh 
battery. No wonder, we easily managed a day and a half with medium to 
heavy usage over the week we tested the product.<br />
We are talking about 30 hours of usage without much trouble and it can last even longer if you are a frugal user.<br />
<br />
Our
 testing usage involved 2 hours of phones calls, two email accounts, two
 social media accounts, 15-20 photos on an average, 45 minutes of 
streaming music while commuting, and 20 minutes of streaming videos on 
YouTube. We also watched movies, browsed the web and played games like 
Dead Trigger 2 for considerable stretches.<br />
<br />
This is impressive battery performance.<br />

 the Honor 6 Plus makes a compelling case for itself. This holds truer 
if you are interested in a phablet. Its camera alone is a feature that 
will wow many, but moreover the device offers good performance, a great 
screen and impressive battery life.<br />
<br />
Frankly, there is nothing 
wrong with the device. If you had to be overly critical then you'd 
probably say that its design is uncomfortable and its user interface is 
not very attractive when compared to stock Android Lollipop. On every 
other aspects, the Honor 6 Plus gets everything right.<br />

For many users, stock Android is the purest and best rendition of 
Google's operating system. But apart from the Nexus-branded smartphones,
 it rarely shows up on any flagship smartphones. Manufacturers like to 
modify Android and give it their own unique look and feel before using 
it on their phones. <br />

Motorola's phones are the only ones that 
buck this trend. More or less, you get pure Android on its phones. But 
most of the Motorola phones are meant for the budget and mainstream 
market. Nexus 6 is an exception. It is made by Motorola and it runs 
stock Android. But it is also too big to be called a smartphone.<br />
<br />
In
 fact, if you want stock Android in a really nice phone, your option 
right now is limited to the Nexus 5. But then that is a phone that came 
out in 2013. <br />
<br />
This is the reason why the Motorola Moto Turbo 
is such an interesting product. Launched recently in India, it is a 
thoroughly high-end phone. It packs the best hardware package found in 
an Android phone with the goodness of stock Android. Does it really 
dazzle? Well, we intend to find that out. <br />
<br />

The
 Moto Turbo is different from the Moto X and the Nexus 6. Yet, it shares
 design elements with Motorola's entire portfolio of phones. Like other 
Moto phones, it has a subtly curved back, which makes it easy to hold in
 single hand. But what separates the Turbo from phones like the Moto X 
and the Moto G is the unique material used on the back. It has a back 
cover made of ballistic nylon, which is the same material used in the 
construction of bulletproof vests. It lends the phone a textured fabric 
like feel, which feels nice in hand. It is also very solid. <br />
<br />
The ballistic nylon also adds a degree of water resistance, which is always nice to have. <br />
The
 Turbo is also a quite chubby phone as it measures 11.3mm at its 
thickest point and 8.3mm at its thinnest. But the curve on the back 
masks the fact that phone measures in excess of 11mm, which is really 
thick by modern standards. Though this is a compromise that has been 
made to fit in the massive 3,900mAh battery. The big battery also adds 
weight to the Turbo. Ffor its size, this is a heavy phone at 169 grams. <br />
<br />
The
 phone has capacitive buttons on the front unlike other Motorola phones,
 which we think is a step backwards in terms of usability and design. <br />
<br />
Uniquely,
 the volume keys on the right can be pulled out to access the nano SIM 
slot. While innovative, we were not impressed with the travel on those 
keys and many times we hit the power button instead of the volume 
rockers.<br />
<br />
Motorola has also done a good job of reducing the sides 
of the borders surrounding the screen. The 5.2-inch display on the Moto 
Turbo is flanked by minimal bezels and this helps reduce the overall 
footprint of the device. <br />
<br />
All in all, the phone has a nice design, but it's not going to turn heads the way an iPhone does. <br />

 have already stated that the Moto Turbo is bit of a hardware champ. The
 display reflects this. The phone has a 5.2-inch AMOLED display with 2K 
resolution. In fact, the Moto Turbo has the highest pixel density on any
 phone in the market right now. That being true, a display is more than 
its resolution. It is also about contrast ratios, colour fidelity and 
brightness levels. <br />
<br />
The Moto Turbo is good at all those 
parameters, but just not the best. We feel that the Galaxy Note 4 has a 
more vibrant screen than it. <br />
<br />
However, we found the viewing angles to be good and the phone was usable even when we were directly under the sun. <br />

Images,
 videos, and text look good on this screen. It has really deep blacks, 
which is a quality of AMOLED displays. It is just not the best. That 
title is still with the Galaxy Note 4. <br />

The
 Moto Turbo has a 21-megapixel camera on the back, which also flaunts a 
dual-LED flash. It also has a f/2.0 aperture, but unlike the camera in 
the Nexus 6, there's no optical image stabilisation. <br />
<br />
On 
paper, this looks like a great camera but in the real world, it returned
 mixed results. With the Moto Turbo you can shoot some stunning macro 
shots in good lighting as well as some really poor panoramas in the 
evening. Yes, it is this inconsistent. <br />
<br />
A lot of these issues 
could be due to the Motorola camera app, which is not great. It has an 
odd focusing mechanism. If you are used to tap to focus than you will be
 at sea with the Moto Turbo camera app. It will take the shot the moment
 you tap to lock focus. On the Moto Turbo a user needs to drag the focus
 circle, but often it does not lock focus. <br />
<br />
This often is the 
main cause for the mixed camera performance. In terms of colour 
accuracy, the camera is reliable, but in dimly-lit scenes you'll find a 
lot of noise and graininess in the images. <br />
The camera app is 
also built in such a way that it is tailored for people who just want to
 point-and-shoot and want nothing to do with manual settings. Leave 
exposure settings, you don't even get things like ISO and metering. If 
you need more control then perhaps you can look at an app like Camera 
FV-5. <br />
<br />
The rear camera can also shoot 4K video and slow-motion
 videos at 720p. The quality of the videos is decent with the camera 
doing a good job in automatically adjusting the focus. That said the 
audio quality that is captured along with the footage is poor. You 
shouldn't be using this camcorder to create a bootlegged video of a 
concert.<br />
<br />
On the front, there's a 2-megapixel camera. It shoots 
images that have lots of grain and hence is not going to click great 
selfies for you. <br />
<br />
It is not that the Moto Turbo has a 
particularly bad camera. But it is definitely the kind of performance we
 expect from a phone that costs above <span class="rupee">R<span>s.</span></span>40,000.
 Other phones in this price range click much better photos. You will be 
compromising on the camera quality with the Moto Turbo. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Software </b></span></i></span><br />
<br />
One
 of the best things about the Moto Turbo is that you get a phone running
 an almost unadulterated version of Android 5.0.2 Lollipop 
out-of-the-box. This is basically the same experience as you'll get on 
the Nexus 6. This makes the phone's interface look very pretty and 
wicked fast - faster than even an iPhone in terms of navigation. <br />
<br />
You
 also get all the goodness of Google's flamboyant looking 'material 
design' and some Motorola extras. So you get neat additions like the 
Moto Migrate app, the Active display notification system which works in 
tandem with the AMOLED display. You can synchronise your phone with the 
Moto Connect app which allows you to send and receive text messages 
through the Chrome Web Browser on the desktop. <br />
<br />
To summarise, the software on the Tturbo is classic Android Lollipop. It is fast, looks pretty and functional. <br />

 Moto Turbo is the fastest Android phone we have tested. At least it 
feels like that. Yes, it is that good. Though this is on expected lines 
as the phone has the beastly Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor
 clocked at 2.7GHz inside it. There is 3GB RAM and 64GB of internal 
memory. <br />
Opening apps and scrolling is lag-free on the Turbo. 
The phone multitasks like a champ. We had more than 20 apps open at one 
point and we saw no sign of lag.<br />
<br />
 The phone is absolutely blistering and 
even compared to the iPhone 6 it keeps up. It can be argued that it is 
faster than the iPhone 6 in navigation thanks to the faster animations 
on Android Lollipop. <br />
<br />
Even for gaming, the phone is very good.
 It leverages the Adreno 420 GPU and performance with games like Dead 
Trigger 2 and Shadowgun is top notch. Frame rate drops were few and far 
in between and generally the graphics of the games were better than what
 we could see on the devices like the OnePlus One, which uses the older 
Adreno 330 GPU. <br />
<br />
Once, when we were stress testing the phone 
with video games it got uncomfortably hot. But strangely that happened 
only once. In the subsequent test, even when we tried to replicate the 
earlier, we found the phone perfectly cool and fine. <br />
<br />
Call 
quality in Delhi area on a Vodafone network was solid. We faced only one
 dropped call during our test period, and that was probably due to the 
network issues and not the phone related problem. <br />
Unlike most
 phones in its segment, the Moto Turbo lacks 4G support for India. 
Though currently 4G is not all that well available in India, support for
 it would've definitely made the Turbo a better phone. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Battery life </b></span></i></span><br />

reasons why someone will buy the Moto Turbo. Largely, it fulfils the 
promise of being a roadrunner. Unlike most phones in the market, you can
 use the Moto Turbo well in to the second day on a single charge. <br />
<br />
On
 average, the Moto Turbo will last you anything between 28-32 hours 
under medium to heavy usage. These figures are very impressive. Using 
Motorola's charger, the phone can also charge pretty quickly. It can 
reach the 50 per cent mark within the hour, though for a full charge the
 phone can take as long as 3 hours. <br />
<br />
Our usage while testing 
the battery included two email accounts, two social media accounts, 25 
minutes of YouTube, 45 minutes of music streaming while on commute and 
15-20 photographs in a day. We also played games with the phone for 30 
minutes. <br />
<br />

battery life is unparalleled. It also is rather capacious with 64GB of 
onboard storage. <br />

Soon after making the 16GB variant of the device available sans 
registration, Chinese tech company Xiaomi has announced that the 64GB 
variant of the Mi 4 smartphone will go on open sale on March 28, 2015. 
This however looks like a one day affair, as the company has 
specifically mentioned that the Mi 4 64GB will be available via open 
sale tomorrow.<br />
<br />
The Xiaomi Mi 4 64GB will be exclusively available via online retailer Flipkart at a price of <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>23,999. The company took to its official @MiIndiaOfficial Twitter handle to make the formal announcement.<br />
<br />
The company has however not detailed the exact number of units that 
would be made available for sale. Considering Xiaomi's track record, we 
expect the available units to go out of stock in a jiffy. <br />
The
 Xiaomi Mi 4 features a 5-inch full-HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen 
display with a 1080x1920 pixels resolution that roughly translates to 
441 ppi. It is powered by a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 
processor coupled with Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB RAM.<br />

A better design, sharper camera and easier to use software make the new Galaxy S6 phones the best Samsung has yet to offer.<br />
Although
 Samsung has been praised for its improved hardware, much of what I like
 is in the software - specifically, what's not in it. After a few years 
of making phones difficult to use with a slew of questionable features, 
Samsung continues to streamline its phones with the S6.<br />
Advance 
orders begin Friday, with delivery expected April 10. Prices vary by 
carrier, though they typically start at $600 to $685 for the main S6 
phone with 32 gigabytes of storage. A premium model, the Galaxy S6 Edge,
 costs about $100 more and offers curved screens to glance at content 
from the side.<br />
Here are 5 things to know about the phones.<br />
<b>HANDLING</b><br />
Gone
 is the cheap-looking plastic back. The design is more stylish, with 
metal sides and a glass back, similar to older iPhones. Although I like 
the look, the glass makes the phone feel slippery, like a shiny marble 
countertop. Get a case; the regular S6 phone slipped out of my hands a 
few times. Apple's iPhones now have metal backs and feel sturdier to 
grip. That said, the Edge version doesn't feel as slippery, perhaps 
because I'm gripping the back part tighter given that the screen curves 
halfway down the sides.<br />
With the new design, the S6 loses 
waterproof protection and the ability to replace the battery and add 
storage. Losses, but not big ones.<br />
<b>TAKING PICTURES</b><br />
I'm
 impressed with the images I've taken so far. Many of the shots had 
great focus, matching the performance of the iPhone 6. Colors on a green
 store sign weren't as strong as those shot with Samsung's Galaxy Note 4
 - and that's good. While stunning, colors on Note 4 images sometimes 
look unnatural. I haven't noticed that so far on the S6.<br />
One nice 
touch: Quickly double tap the home button to launch the camera, even 
when the screen is off. Though most phones let you launch the camera 
from the lock screen, I still lose shots in the time it takes to slide 
or tap the right icon.<br />
<b>WATCHING VIDEO</b><br />
I liked the 
rich colors produced by Samsung's Amoled screen technology as I watched 
"Mad Men" on Netflix. But I found the controls very sensitive. Video 
stopped several times as I inadvertently hit the back button, which is 
built into the phone's frame. In addition, video often paused when I 
mistakenly touched the edge of the screen, launching the notification 
bar. You must handle the phone with care.<br />
<b>FINDING WHAT YOU NEED</b><br />
Samsung's software improvements are subtle yet welcome.<br />
The
 most noticeable change is replacing many icons with text. For instance,
 there's a tool for searching through your settings. Previous Samsung 
phones depicted that as a magnifying glass icon. On S6 phones, it simply
 says "SEARCH." Same goes for controls such as "EDIT" and "MORE." This 
applies only to Samsung features and apps, though. You'll still get 
mysterious icons with third-party apps.<br />
You also get the latest 
version of Android, Lollipop. Benefits include bringing notifications to
 the lock screen, similar to iPhones. That saves a lot of taps getting 
to the message you want. You can restrict what appears there if you're 
sensitive to prying eyes.<br />
<b>PUSHING THE EDGE</b><br />
The Edge 
model's side displays enable some nifty features, such as having the 
sides flash a different color based on who's calling. But the Edge comes
 across as something still looking for more practical uses.<br />
The 
regular S6 model will be fine for most people. Both models come with a 
fingerprint scanner for unlocking the phone and, when Samsung Pay 
launches this summer, making payments with a tap of the phone at retail 
stores. Both let you open multiple apps side by side - something common 
in traditional computers but generally lacking in phones and tablets. 
Both also have fast-charging capabilities; I got to 47 percent in just 
30 minutes on the regular S6.<br />

The phones remain at 5.1 inches 
diagonally, just a tad larger than the iPhone 6, which got a size boost 
over the previous year's models.<br />
The new S6 phones show that 
Samsung's more than a big screen. I look forward to seeing how Apple 
responds with new models this fall.</div>

<br />As soon as we received Xiaomi's media invite for its March 12 India 
launch event, our whole team was instantly divided into two quarters. 
The question was whether or not the company would launch two devices: 
the Redmi 2 and/or the MiPad. The invite of course dropped in hints for 
both the devices, but some of us were still uncertain if the long 
delayed MiPad would eventually see the light of day in India anytime 
soon. After a long hiatus of almost 9 months, Xiaomi's first ever table 
finally arrived in India.<br />

 Whether or not it justifies its price is still to be seen, in India, 
that is. It's good that the company realized that, "hey, we've been 
stupendously late with this one, let's not frustrate them anymore" when 
it decided to drop their usual flash sale method to sell the device 
here. Now that's saying a lot for the company's first ever tablet 
offering.<br />
<br />
Companies like Xiaomi tend to produce devices as per 
demand; not a piece less, not a piece more. At the same time they 
replace their devices with new, upgraded variants: making the older ones
 obsolete. Take for instance the classic case of the Redmi 2, the 
company seems to have discontinued the original Redmi 1S as it is no 
longer up for buy on Flipkart. The Redmi 2 will go for sale on March 24,
 again via the flash sale method.<br />
<br />
That said Xiaomi has built quite
 a reputation for itself in a very short time period, not for churning 
out some of the more interestingly specd gadgets, but their hugely 
aggressive pricing. The MiPad comes at a price of <span class="rupee">R<span>s.</span></span>12,999
 that when you go through its spec sheet would seem you're paying for 
peanuts, but what you're getting is a piece every bit as premium as say 
the Nexus 9, even the iPad Mini to an extent.<br />
<br />
So, how exactly does
 the MiPad stack up against its rivals? In hindsight, it appears as if 
the MiPad is some kind of cross between the iPad Mini and the Nexus 9, 
both very powerful devices.<br />
On first look, the MiPad looks like an
 iPhone 5C on steroids. Look at it this way, if Apple ever decided to 
make an iPad Mini out of plastic, well, the MiPad would be what it 
should look like.<br />
<br />
Considering the fact that Xiaomi doesn't shy 
away from cladding its devices with metal (the Mi4 is a classic 
example), it's only obvious why the MiPad is all plastic: too much 
inspiration kills the fun.<br />
The MiPad features a 7.9-inch IPS LCD 
capacitive touchscreen display with a 1536 x2048 pixels resolution that 
roughly translates to 324 ppi. This is the exact resolution as the iPad 
mini with Retina Display. Although the Nexus 9 has the same resolution, 
it features a larger 8.9-inch screen so the pixel density reduces 
accordingly to 281 ppi.<br />
<br />
The MiPad is powered by a 2.2 GHz 
quad-core Nvidia Tegra K1 CPU alongside ULP GeForce Kepler GPU and 2GB 
RAM. The Nexus 9 on the other hand is powered by a 2.3 GHz dual-core 
Nvidia Tegra K1 CPU with Kepler DX1 GPU and 2GB RAM.<br />
<br />
Just for some
 backgrounder here, both the MiPad and the Nexus 9 have the same Nvidia 
Tegra Chip, or 'Super Chip' as Nvidia likes to call it. Still there's a 
difference between the two: the quad-core A15 CPU on-board the MiPad 
comes with only 32-bit capabilities, while the dual-core Denver CPU in 
the Nexus 9 has 64-bit capabilities. Essentially the MiPad should be 
able to utilize all the "console-like K1 specs" of this CPU, but the ARM
 v8-based central processor design of the Tegra K1 in the Nexus 9 can 
take better advantage of Lollipop support for 64-bit CPU architectures.<br />
<br />
In
 that case, the Nexus 9 is a future proof device, but since we are still
 some distance away from having apps that could utilize Lollipop's 
64-bit capabilities to full extent, the MiPad is still not all that 
dated after all. Also, the fact that you're paying an exact double for 
something that is not even available yet in the case of the Nexus 9 may 
be the driving force for people to invest their money on the MiPad.<br />
<br />
There
 is going to be some difference in the level of graphics of course, but 
we will have to wait for the detailed review of the MiPad before we can 
comment on that aspect. <br />
One thing that is expected to up the 
MiPad's value for money quotient is its support for Micro-SD card (up to
 128GB). Both the Nexus 9 and the iPad Mini with Retina Display lack the
 same. <br />
The MiPad is backed by a 6700 mAh battery, same as the 
Nexus 9. The iPad Mini on the other hand comes with a smaller 6470 mAh

inspired MIUI 6 for its ability to integrate the look and feel of iOS 
with the core functionality of Android, we are yet to fully test how 
well Xiaomi has modified the same for it first tablet.<br />

Some of you may argue why compare the MiPad that costs just <span class="rupee">R<span>s.</span></span>12,999
 to the iPad Mini and the Nexus 9 that cost a good double to it at all. 
The point we are trying to make here is, the MiPad takes a lot of 
inspiration from the look and feel of the iPad Mini and the Android 
experience on the Nexus 9. Therefore the comparison is only fair. That 
said, the fact that the MiPad costs peanuts in comparison to both the 
devices yet brings a little of both to the table is surely going to 
tempt users into trying it out. <br />

Xiaomi had launched the Redmi 2 in January 2015, only now it has 
arrived in India. It's not all that surprising since companies like 
Xiaomi tend to manufacture devices as per demand, and not in bulk 
therefore all its devices tend to have different availability schedule 
depending on region.<br />
Now that it has arrived, the question is: is 
it a worthy upgrade? Without mincing any words here, let's just say, yes
 it is, at least on paper. Also the fact that Xiaomi has kept its price 
constant at <span class="rupee">R<span>s.</span></span>6,999 is a good 
thing and is likely to hurt rivals in this price range. More 
importantly, it's going head to head with the just launched Moto E (Gen 
2), an equally capable device.<br />

Keeping
 the original design aesthetics of the Redmi 1S intact, Xiaomi has 
worked a great deal at ensuring that the Redmi 2 is thinner and slimmer 
at the same time when compared with the original. While the Redmi 1S was
 more like a brick of a device, weighing a whopping 158 g for a 4.7-inch
 frame, the new Redmi 2 is now way slimmer at 133 g. <br />
Therefore, although the Redmi 2 still remains to be a 4.7-incher, it is visibly smaller and lighter than the Redmi 1S.<br />
While
 we would have liked some changes in the design aspect here and there, 
it's nice that Xiaomi has toned down the original which was way too 
chunky for our liking. Also, the Redmi 2 still comes with a removable 
back cover with a removable battery, which is nice considering more and 
more companies are now going for non-removable batteries.<br />

Display</h2>
The
 Xiaomi Redmi 2 retains the original display configuration of the Redmi 
1S, meaning a 4.7-inch HD IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display with a 
720x1280 pixels resolution that roughly translates to 312ppi. We were 
pretty satisfied with the Redmi 1S's display and viewing angles in our 
review. Therefore, the Redmi 2 is likely going to give you more or less 
the same experience in this department.<br />
That said the Redmi 2 now comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 for added protection. The same was missing in the original. <br />

The
 Redmi 2 receives a major bump in the processing department and now 
comes with a 1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 CPU with 
Adreno 306 GPU and 1GB RAM. Moreover, a limited edition of the device is
 expected to be available soon that will come with 2GB RAM, keeping the 
CPU and GPU constant. <br />

<b>Xiaomi Redmi 2: </b>1.2 GHz quad-core Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410 CPU with Adreno 306 GPU and 2GB RAM, 8GB internal expandable up to 32GB<br />

This
 is also one area that sees a significant improvement in the Redmi 2. 
The device runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box with MIUI 6 on top. 
Now MIUI 6 is a significant design overhaul over MIUI 5. In our detailed
 comparison between the MIUI 6 and MIUI 5, we had clearly mentioned that
 the MIUI 5 is clearly one of the better looking UIs out there and every
 bit as functional. <br />
Of course it has some elements taken straight
 out of iOS 8, but overall, it's a pretty well put up UI that is also 
not a major resource hog. <br />

 Redmi 2 keeps the rear camera constant, i.e. an 8MP autofocus with LED 
flash and bumps up the front camera to a 2MP in place of the 1.6MP found
 on the Redmi 1S. All Xiaomi devices come with good quality snappers, 
and we believe the cameras on board the Redmi 2 won't be a 
disappointment either.<br />

Battery</h2>
The
 Redmi 2 receives a bump in the battery department as well. It is now 
backed by a larger 2200 mAh battery, which is nice to see as Xiaomi has 
significantly slimmed the device yet managed to deck in a larger 
battery. The original Redmi 2 had good battery life, however, we will 
have to wait for the review before saying the same for the Redmi 2. That
 said, the company has bumped up the processor in the Redmi 2 keeping 
the display specs constant. Therefore, the bump in battery is likely to 
compensate for the bumped up processor, but that's not a confirmation. <br />

 Xiaomi Redmi 2 is not a drastic upgrade over the original Redmi 1S. The
 company has kept all the aspects that were well to do in the Redmi 1S 
intact while improving upon the stuff that was bringing the original 
down. They have toned down the size factor (keeping the display 
constant), bumped up the processor, updated it to the latest MIUI, and 
upped the battery in this one. All this while keeping the price same: <span class="rupee">R<span>s.</span></span>6,999.<br />
Also,
 the Redmi 2 is 4G LTE capable, and is certainly a much better option 
than the Lenovo A6000 which is priced the same and is another cheap 4G 
smartphone.<br />
Our verdict: The Redmi 2 is a good upgrade and improves upon the low pointers of the Redmi 1S, which is nice. </div>

Motorola's new Moto E aka the Moto E (2nd generation) would launch in
 India in the coming days. The likely date is March 10. We will have 
more to say about the device once it is here in India. But while that 
will take some days, we checked out the device at the Mobile World 
Congress in Barcelona and we can give you a rough idea of what you can 
expect from the new Moto E.<br />
In terms of looks and design, the new 
Moto E is not all that different from the older model. But the build 
quality seems slightly better. The finishing is better and the plastic 
used to make the shell of the device has a better feel to it. The new 
Moto E is slightly bigger - but has the same 12.3mm thick body. The 
difference between the old and new Moto E is so marginal in terms of 
dimensions that it is not going to be apparent to the users. The new one
 fits in hands as effortlessly as the old one, largely because of the 
well-rounded shape and subtly curved back.<br />

 changes between the new and old Moto E are in the hardware. The new one
 comes with a bigger screen - 4.5-inch compared to the 4.3-inch - though
 resolution remains the same 540p. This gives the new Moto E slightly 
less dense pixel pitch if you go by numbers but in during actual use, it
 is not noticeable. In fact, the new Moto E has a better screen. It 
shows punchier colours and has better viewing angles. This is almost in 
class of the Moto G screen, although we feel the brightness is still 
less than optimal. But considering the price the new Moto E is going to 
carry, we feel that it will be a compromise we can make.<br />
The 
performance is another aspect where the difference is very much 
apparent. The new Moto E, at least for daily use, is going to be as fast
 as any other Android phones. During the brief time we spent with it, we
 didn't notice any lag, dropped frames, freezes, missed swipe etc on the
 new Moto E. Apps open quickly, the scrolling is smooth, and switching 
between tasks is effortless.<br />
Obviously much of this is because of 
the improved hardware in the phone. The Moto E that we tried was running
 Qualcomm's Snapdragon 410 processor, though in India, the company is 
likely to launch the one with the Snapdragon 400 processor (3G version) 
to replace the old Moto E. But much of it is also because of the Android
 Lollipop.<br />

 is using an almost unmodified version of Android Lollipop aka pure 
Android on the Moto E. This means almost all Lollipop features, 
including app drawer with white background is available on the new Moto 
E. This is also a surprise because the old Moto G, which has hardware 
very similar to the new Moto E, did not get these Lollipop user 
interface features.<br />
There is much more to Moto E than design and 
performance. For example, we know nothing about its actual battery life,
 camera performance and network performance etc. We will explore these 
details in our review of the phone when the device is available in 
India. But for now we can say that the new Moto E looks like a worthy 
upgrade to the India's most popular budget phone of 2014. For more, stay

first phones in the market to run Android 5.0 Lollipop in an 
unadulterated form out of the box. The phone is also said to support 4G

the phone, which is powered by an older Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

While we are yet to see a major flagship release from Microsoft, the 
company has been busy shelling out budget offerings in the market for 
quite some time now. In line with this trend, the company announced two 
new affordable handsets, in the Lumia 640 and the Lumia 640XL at the MWC
 2015 event in Barcelona.<br />
While the spec sheet of both the devices
 looks more or less the same, it is when you delve into the details that
 you realize that Microsoft just released a lower mid-range phablet: the
 Lumia 640XL. Now that's a first for the company and a welcome one at 
that.<br />
Also a first is the fact that Microsoft's all new phablet 
comes equipped with Carl Zeiss optics, something that was earlier 
reserved for Nokia's high-end phones.<br />
It's no doubt that the

liked Microsoft to maybe bump up the CPU a bit to stay ahead in the

Also, concerns still remain about the Windows 8.1 OS and availability of apps for the platform.<br />

 is the key area that distinguishes the Lumia 640XL from the Lumia 640 
after the display size difference. The Lumia 640XL phablet comes with a 
13MP rear camera with Carl Zeiss optics, something that we have grown to
 associate with high-end Nokia smartphones. The arrival of the feature 
on a lower mid-ranger like the Lumia 640XL courtesy Microsoft is indeed a
 stepping stone for the company. To add to the grand scheme of things, 
the Lumia 640XL also includes a 5MP front camera. Both the cameras 
on-board the 640XL can shoot 1080p videos.<br />
The Lumia 640 on the 
other hand comes with a standard 8MP front camera that can record 1080p 
videos @30fps. It sports a 1MP front camera that can shoot 720p videos.

While
 the larger Lumia 640XL phablet decks in a 3000 mAh battery, the Lumia 
640 is backed by a 2500 mAh battery. Considering the fact that both the 
devices run the same processor and have the same display resolution, it 
is little surprising why Microsoft decided to bump up the battery in the
 Lumia 640XL. It's obviously trying to stay head of the game by beefing 
it up with a larger battery to ascertain its 'phablet' specifics. 
Ideally, the phablet is likely to give you a better battery life but we 
still believe a slightly bumped up processor would have done a better 
job in making it count in the longer run.  <br />

Both
 the Lumia 640 and Lumia 640XL are mainstream affordable Microsoft 
offerings. While the Lumia 640 is expected to be priced around the <span class="rupee">R<span>s.</span></span>9,000 mark, the Lumia 640XL will most likely tap the lower mid-range segment.<br />
The
 company has announced that both the handsets will come in 3G and 4G 
variants. The Lumia 640 will be priced at Euros 139 (3G) and Euros 159 
(4G). Meanwhile, the Lumia 640XL will be priced at Euros 189 (3G) and 
Euros 219 (4G).<br />
Buyers in India will see the handsets hitting the retail shelves as early as April, 2015.     <br />
