We live in a world that is fast moving towards voice calling via the 
internet through various VoIP apps. There are plenty of options for 
users so that they can make calls for free on a Wi-Fi network or a 3G 
network. WhatsApp is the most notable new entrant to offer internet 
calling but is it the best considering voice calling has been a feature 
on numerous apps before it?<br />
We tried six popular apps that allow 
people to make calls using different conditions and in different kind of
 usage conditions. Result? We were surprised to find that the Google 
Hangouts was the best performer even though few people use it for VoIP 
calls. To know why we reached this conclusion, read on...<br />

While
 testing multiple VOIP apps we found the voice calling experience on 
Google's Hangout app to be the best. Calls were clear, and we noticed 
the least amount of latency in the responses while using Hangouts. 
Hangouts, of course, is much more than just for voice calling as its 
marquee feature is video calls. For that too, Hangouts was incredibly 
competent - both on Wi-Fi and also on the sub-par 3G connectivity we get
 in Delhi NCR. The interface of Hangouts is pretty straight forward and 
the best bit is that it is preloaded on all Android smartphones. So, you
 don't even need to download it if you are a user of an Android 
smartphone. The app is also available on iOS and can be downloaded for 
free, however, if you're a Windows Phone user then you are out in the 
cold.<br />

Viber</h2>
<br />
Viber is the quintessential 
internet voice calling app. The app made a name for itself by offering 
simple internet based voice calling to millions of users across multiple
 platforms including Android, iOS, Windows Phone and BlackBerry. The app
 continues to offer the same functionality and the voice calling in our 
tests was quite robust. That said, we noticed quite a bit of latency 
even while using the app on a speedy Wi-Fi network, but certainly the 
experience was usable. Viber has branched out into other areas and offer
 features like public chats and instant messaging, but the voice calling
 capabilities of the app remains its calling card.<br />

Skype</h2>
<br />
Skype
 is perhaps the oldest app on this list to offer voice calling 
capabilities. It leverages Microsoft's unique peer-to-peer technology 
and it offers a sublime calling and video chat experience when the 
network is really really good. If network is not good, then the 
experience is also not so good. Testing it on network in Delhi, we faced
 a lot of difficulties. Many times we could not connect a call and when 
we even managed to connect, the calls had very high latency, making 
conversation next to impossible. That being true, on a fast 8MBps Wi-Fi 
network we managed passable voice calls and video chats. The good news 
about Skype is that it available on iOS, Android and is baked into 
Windows Phone. In fact, in the coming months Skype on Windows Phone 
should offer a much enhance experience with the update to Windows 10. It
 is also worth noting that Skype also powers the video chat function 
built into Facebook's Messenger's app.<br />

WeChat</h2>
<br />
WeChat
 is considered to be the WhatsApp of China. Made by Chinese Internet 
giant TenCent, WeChat is one of the most comprehensive VoIP solutions in
 the market. It has tons of features and behaves like quasi-social 
network of sorts. Many features heralded in WeChat have become core 
functions on iOS. The walkie-talkie feature is a great example of this. 
While, it has a walkie-talkie function, WeChat also has a full-fledged 
voice calling feature, which is buried inside a mountain of user 
interface created in tacky chrome finish. We found that finding the 
voice calling feature itself is a little cumbersome, but once you have 
placed the call and the conversation is going, the quality is mostly 
decent. Note the use of word mostly because when the quality is not good
 it is really pathetic.<br />

WhatsApp</h2>
<br />
WhatsApp 
is a giant in terms of instant messaging, but when it comes down to 
voice calling, it is the newest kid on the block. It offers passable 
voice calling capabilities, but let's be honest, it is a new feature and
 WhatsApp has still not mastered it. Calls drop abruptly, the audio is 
garbled and often the call doesn't connect at all. Adding to its woes is
 this odd invite-call to get the voice dialling feature for Android 
users. Still, iOS users can't get it, though there is talk that the 
feature is coming soon for them and Windows Phone users alike.<br />

Line</h2>
<br />
Line
 is yet another popular VoIP solution. It offers an integrated chat and 
voice calling function. That said, it asks to sync with all your 
contacts which makes for a slow experience in the case you want to make 
calls immediately. But once your address book is synced you can make 
calls to your Line friends pretty seamlessly. The call button is also 
clearly indicated on inside the chat menu so you can instantly switch 
between a chat and a Line call. The call quality, however, is patchy at 
best. It is decent when used with a speedy Wi-Fi network, but it is 
pretty much useless on a 3G network. Also, we noticed sometimes even if a
 call was going through the receiver was unable to pick up the call 
because the network was deemed to be unstable.<br />
At the end of the 
day, the big takeaway is that all voice calling apps are heavily 
dependent on the quality of Internet on offer - be it Wi-Fi or 3G. If 
the speed is not good chances are that your internet calling experience 
is going to be unreliable. While this is true, we tested all the apps on
 the same network, and on the basis of that we can certainly say that 
Google's Hangouts pulls ahead, followed by Viber and Skype. WhatsApp has
 some catching to do as far as audio quality is concerned. Likewise, 
WeChat and Line also need to improve the call quality and perhaps, also 
need to simplify the overall user experience.<br />

At a time when the line between tablets and smartphones is thinning 
due to the entry of phablets in the market, Asus Fonepad 7 FE171CG 
appears to be another shot at the select consumer. The tablet seems to 
be a strong contender in its price range, at least on the paper, with 
2GB RAM and an Intel Atom Z2520 processor. <br />

The Fonepad 7 (FE171CG) was announced globally in January. But in India it was launched just recently at a price of <span class="rupee">R<span>s.</span></span>10,999.
 There are not many tablets in this range that also offer calling 
facility with 3G-enabled dual-SIMs. But this one does. Coupled with 
decent hardware, this could be a good option for a lot of tablet buyers.
 It all depends on how it performs and whether all the features it packs
 in work as advertised or not. <br />
So let's find out if the Fonepad 7 is worth its price or not.<br />
<br />
<b>Design and build quality</b><br />

For
 its new tablet, Asus continues to use the design language that it 
debuted earlier. This means the Fonepad 7 (FE171CG) looks almost similar
 to previous Asus tablets like the FE170 and the FE380. This is both 
good and bad. It is good because the design itself is pretty nice. It 
works well enough to make the tablet a decent-looking device. But it is 
bad because it is also boring. Asus is repeating this design in tablet 
after tablet and that means there is nothing unique about it. <br />
<br />
Though
 on the back of the Fonepad 7 there are some differences. For example, 
the new tablet comes with matte finish on the back cover. Then the 
bronze colour on our review unit added to the style -- though on 
Flipkart the tablet is available only in black and white colours -- and 
made it look classier than its peers. <br />
<br />
The volume and power 
buttons are on the top right side of the tablet, and on the left it has 
slots for SIM cards which is covered by a flap. The overall design is 
seamless and nothing seems out of place. The only bit that could have 
been better is the port for the microSD card, which looks ugly. It is 
also a port without any flap and we fail to understand why Asus has left
 the memory card uncovered. <br />
<br />
With dimensions of 
196x110.6x7.9mm and weight of 280 grams, the Fonepad 7 is neither too 
heavy nor too large. The compact size means you can use it for calling 
purposes in emergency. Though we don't suggest you use it as your 
regular communication device like a phone. The fashion police may not 
like it.<br />
<br />
Overall, the tablet has a decent design and build. 
You can hold it comfortably for hours. Due to the matte finish, smudges 
are not visible on the tablet. However, the back cover is prone to 
scratches. Also, it is not a unique design at all.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Display</b><br />

 tablet has a 7-inch display with 600 X 1024 pixels resolution. In terms
 of resolution, this is definitely not the best display in the price 
range. The Dell Venue 7 gives a better pixel density at the resolution 
of 800X1280 pixels and the same goes for the Fonepad 7 ME175CG. Both the
 tablets are priced lower than the one in question.<br />

We also 
found the tablet's brightness to be insufficient even at full bar, which
 makes it hard to use under the sun. However, the screen displays decent
 colours and contrast in normal light. Unlike the back cover that 
handles oily fingers and survive without any smudges, the screen is a 
fingerprint magnet. After the day-long use, you will need to thoroughly 
wipe it. <br />
<br />
<b>Camera</b><br />

 tablet sports 8-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel secondary 
camera. The images that we clicked again proved that the number of 
megapixel is not everything. A camera needs to have a better sensor. And
 Asus Fonepad 7 doesn't seem to have one that is in any way above 
average.<br />
<br />
The images that we clicked with the Fonepad 7 in 
daylight seemed to be quite good. Though they were a bit grainy and 
lacked details when seen after zooming to their full size. <br />
<br />
The
 performance in poor light, however, was really bad. The photos taken in
 low light, or in night, turned out be unusable. These images were full 
of noise and lacked proper contrast. <br />
<br />
Compared to a phone, the
 camera in Fonepad 7 is below average in terms of performance. But for a
 tablet, we can call it respectable. When the light is good, it can 
capture some really crisps shots. <br />
The camera app on Fonepad 7
 is also entirely different from the Android camera app, it comes with a
 hoard of features and modes. But most of these features are unlikely to
 be used often.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Software</b><br />
<br />
The
 tablet comes with its own Zen user interface (UI), which is layered on 
top of Android 4.3 KitKat. Though this is an Android tablet, it is a 
universe apart in terms of UI looks and feel. Those who have a taste for
 pure Android will probably hate the Zen UI. <br />
<br />
Asus has added 
features and apps that may come handy to a loyal Asus user. Though most 
users are likely to ignore them. The tablet comes with over a dozen 
pre-installed apps, and unfortunately, none of them can be uninstalled. 
These, we believe, are unnecessary apps. They won't be used by most of 
users. They just make the device feel bloated, take up hardware 
resources like RAM and storage and eventually slow down the tablet. <br />
<br />
Though
 there are a few things such as in-built app-lock,  
notification-cum-settings menu and widget-laden lock screen that are 
somewhat useful. <br />
<br />
<b>Performance</b><br />

The
 tablet comes with the Intel Atom Z2520 processor clocked at 1.20GHz. 
The device has 2GB RAM. This looks impressive on paper. Though the 
performance is kind of mixed bag. <br />
The device showed almost no
 lag during normal usage, but when put to its paces with some heavy 
multitasking and gaming, it showed slight lag. Also, playing a video or 
games for long durations -- around 20 to 30 minutes or more -- makes the
 device somewhat uncomfortably hot under its back cover. <br />
<br />
In 
fact, gaming is not an area where this tablet shines. When games were 
run at their maximum graphics settings, we found the frame rate less 
than perfect. There was lag and evident dropped frames. Reducing the 
graphics settings also reduces the lag but it doesn't entirely go away. <br />
We
 also feel that Asus needs to fine-tune the software on this tablet. 
There were occasions when we found that the device got hot even with 
normal use or while clicking multiple photos or recording videos. This 
was unusual, especially for a tablet. <br />
<br />
Still, overall we found
 the Fonepad 7 to be fairly decent in the performance department. Even 
with multiple apps running in the background, the screen was receptive 
to touch. Though here too we found some software bugs. For example, 
there were occasions when opening the notification shade was slow, as if
 the touch response wasn't registered. This was very random and 
definitely not a deal breaker but we did come across it. <br />
<br />
The 
tablet has two SIM card slots, and both are 3G-enabled. You can make 
calls using the Fonepad 7 but while holding it against your cheek, you 
are going to look a little ridiculous. The speaker placement is also 
somewhat awry. Even when we placed it directly over the ear, we found 
varying sound levels during a call. The connectivity is not all that 
rosy. The voice during calls cracked at times even with full bars.<br />
<br />
If
 you are hoping to use the calling feature on this tablet, we suggest 
you use it with a pair of earphones. The experience with earphones is 
much better. <br />
Overall, the performance is decent for the price
 tag. It worked smoothly in day-to-day use. The gaming is, however, a 
weak point. <br />
<br />
<b>Battery</b><br />

 Asus Fonepad 7 packs in a 3950mAh non-removable battery, which we can 
consider a pretty decent one. On normal to light usage it gave us a 
battery backup of up to 20-26 hours, which is more than what we 
expected. It ran for about 6-7 hours while we were engaged in gaming for
 about 30 minutes, browsing Facebook for about 1 hour, calls for about 
30 minutes, etc. <br />
<br />
Overall we feel that the battery life on Fonepad 7 is decent, especially if you are not going to play too many games. <br />
<br />
<b>Should you buy it?</b><br />
<br />

 the Fonepad 7 FE171CG is a decent tablet but not something that we can 
consider best in class. It is not going to dazzle you. For gamers, it is
 not the right tablet. <br />
<br />
But for everyone else it is a decent 
option. Unless you are looking for iPad-class performance or a tablet on
 which you can play Real Racing whole day, you can consider the Fonepad 
7. We can recommend this tablet to all those who need one for surfing 
internet, listening to music, light reading, light gaming, and calling 
once in a while.<br />

In the last two years the demand for phablets aka the large screen 
has gone through the roof. People just love these devices, especially in
 India. Yet, Microsoft, which is trying to push its Windows Phone in a 
market dominated by Android and Apple's iOS, hasn't been particularly 
active in this segment.<br />
So, far it has launched two phablets 
-- the Lumia 1520 and 1320. And that happened in October 2013 at the 
last Nokia World in Abu Dhabi. <br />
<br />
Now, it is making a comeback 
with the Lumia 640 XL. The company knows that the real growth is in the 
mainstream market and hence positioning the 640 XL as a phablet for 
budget shopper. <br />
<br />
The 640 XL is big - 5.7-inches to be precise. But Microsoft has its work cut out as under <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>20,000
 these days it is possible to get a OnePlus One, which basically sports 
flagship class hardware. The Redmond-based company will have you believe
 that the combination of its own hardware, services and software stack 
make for a compelling story. We have been testing the phone for a week 
or so, read on to find out if it's worth your money. <br />

Design and build quality</h2>

That said, it is a massive phone which is not easy to 
carry around. Microsoft's industrial designers have created a pleasing 
design with lots of straight lines, but this also means that from the 
sides, the phone has sharp edges that will dig into your palms, making 
it uncomfortable to hold. <br />
Of course, at 9mm and 171 grams, 
this is a big phone by any metric, so one handed usage is next to 
impossible. Unless, of course, you have abnormally large hands. <br />
<br />
The
 good news is that the overall quality of the product feels first class.
 You don't get the feeling that you are using a cheap product as the fit
 and finish is just fabulous. This is something we have come to expect 
of Microsoft and it doesn't disappoint us. <br />
<br />
There are some 
minor design blemishes though. For instance, the rear camera has a minor
 bulge which adds to the thickness of the product and the screen is 
surrounded by large borders. <br />
We also feel that the borders 
flanking the top and bottom of the display could be smaller, 
particularly as this phone has software based buttons, not capacitive 
hardware keys. That could have also reduced the size of the phone. <br />

 big 5.7-inch display of the Lumia 640 XL dominates the fascia of the 
product and also lends it the 'XL' nomenclature. Thankfully, Microsoft 
has decided to offer a 720p HD IPS panel with its ClearBlack polariser. 
This means that the display has natural looking colours, good viewing 
angles when the phone is viewed off-axis and decent levels of 
brightness, especially when viewed under direct sunlight. </div>

Yes, 
the display has a rather low resolution considering the size of the 
screen, but it appears to be a big improvement from the type of displays
 Microsoft has shipped in the past on phones like the Lumia 530 and 
Lumia 535. The pixel density converts to 259 pixels per inch. <br />
In
 the display settings, you can also manually calibrate the display of 
the Lumia 640 XL to your liking. There are some presets, but we 
preferred to calibrate it on our own. Out of the box, the display had a 
warmer/yellowish tinge, which we did not like. <br />
<br />
In the larger 
scheme of things, we are glad to report that Microsoft has shipped a 
good display in the 640 XL, which can handle any task the average 
smartphone user will throw at the device. This means it is good for 
watching videos, reading text or even getting work done. In fact, we can
 say that the extra wide display particularly is helpful while managing 
Excel sheets or composing large Word documents. <br />

Camera</h2>

The
 one area where Microsoft's Lumia smartphones have always held an edge 
over Android smartphones is in the area of imaging. The Lumia 640 XL 
sure does come with some impressive imaging hardware on the back. It has
 a 13-megapixel camera with 1/3 inch sensor, a f/2.0 aperture and a 
focal length of 28mm. It even has optics from Carl Zeiss, something most
 phones in the price band can't hope to match. </div>

Does all this hardware pay dividends? In one word, yes. <br />
The
 Lumia has a great camera on the back. It works well in day time and 
night time though the images clicked in the evenings do show noise and 
are grainy. <br />
In daylight, the images have ample amount of 
detail and the colo<br />

urs are true to life. With the new Lumia Denim 
update, the phone also manages to take photos relatively quickly. Speed 
is still an issue, but it is not a deal breaker anymore. <br />
The 
camera is equally impressive in low-light scenarios as it can manage to 
cram in a lot of detail though this detail comes with dollops of noise 
that make the photos look too grainy. <br />
<br />
The great bit about 
Microsoft's Lumia smartphones is the Lumia camera app. The unique radial
 user interface allows the user to tweak each and every setting of the 
shot in a simple and intuitive way. This is very handy if you know your 
way around a digital camera as you can manipulate the setting to get 
even better results than the automatic setting. <br />
<br />
The Lumia 640
 XL also excels at shooting videos. It can shoot 1080p videos at 30 
frames per seconds. It largely takes shake-free videos with good quality
 audio. Its camera is also very good at automatically changing the focus
 as the user pans around while shooting videos.<br />

Even on the 
front, Microsoft has equipped the Lumia 640 XL with a wide angle 
5-megapixel sensor, which takes good selfies. More importantly, thanks 
to the wide-angle lens, you can fit in a lot in the frame while taking 
selfies.  So if you are gunning for something similar to the famous 
'Oscar Selfie' with 10 people in it the 640 XL may not be a bad choice. 
Trust us, it will do a better job than the Samsung Galaxy S5, which was 
used for the 'Oscar Selfie'. <br />

 is a weak point of Microsoft's Lumia phones. Windows Phone, which 
powers the Lumia 640 XL just can't match Android and iOS in terms of 
quality and quantity when it comes to apps. Yes, it can be argued that 
Microsoft has enough apps in its store to fulfil the needs of most 
people, but their quality is a different story altogether. </div>

Even 
if one takes a look at the Facebook and Twitter apps, then it is easy to
 realise the gulf in the quality and user experience offered by a 
Windows Phone app and an Android or iOS app. <br />
That said, at 
its heart Windows Phone remains a competent operating system. As always 
there are things that it does better than Android and there are things 
that Android does better than it. <br />
<br />
Largely, of all the 
operating systems in the market, Windows Phone is the simplest of the 
lot. With Windows Phone 8.1, it even gets an Android style notification 
shade. Its Start Screen is dynamic and is always bustling with 
information. There's no denying if you just work with basic apps, 
Windows Phone offers an enjoyable experience. <br />
<br />
However, it 
still does not play well with Google's popular services and neither has a
 virtual assistant that works in India. Hence, it is likely to be 
inferior for anyone coming from Android or iOS. <br />
That said, 
Microsoft's services are well integrated in the OS - so you get things 
like Skype, Office, Nokia Here maps with offline navigation and also a 
bunch of other third party apps. <br />
<br />
Microsoft, in fact, has 
preloaded a lot of stuff on the Lumia 640 XL. Out of the box, the phone 
comes preloaded with Food Panda, Book My Show, BBM, Gameloft, FitBit, 
Make my Trip, OLA Cabs, We Chat and Zomato. Most of these apps are 
essentials, so we are not classifying them as bloatware, however on a 
phone with just 8GB of onboard storage this was a little excessive. <br />
The
 good bit is that unlike Android, Microsoft allows the user to remove 
all preloaded apps. Nothing is forced upon the user. Users can also 
install apps on an SD card unlike Android. <br />
<br />
It is also worth 
keeping in mind that the phone will be upgradable to Windows 10 for the 
phone later in the year. This will add a host of new features to the 
phone including support for universal apps that will work across 
different types of devices. <br />
<br />
To its detriment, currently, its 
software is also not well customised for the large screen the phone 
offers. So there is no windowed multitasking paradigm and even the 
keyboard is not dynamic, offering a one-handed mode. Some of these 
features, however, are expected in the Windows 10 update. <br />
<br />
<h2>
Performance</h2>
By modern standards, the Microsoft Lumia 640 XL is running on frugal 
hardware. It runs on an ageing Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, which 
hums along at 1.2GHz with four cores. It is coupled with 1GB RAM and 8GB
 of internal memory. There's also a microSD card slot with support for 
up to 128 GB of expansion. </div>

The meagre hardware belies the 
performance offered by the Lumia 640 XL. It feels much faster than a 
phone running an ageing processor. Of course, Microsoft's code base for 
Windows Phone is different, and probably more optimised, than Android, 
which enables a smoother and faster experience on similar hardware. <br />
<br />
But
 just to be clear, we are no labelling the performance as earth 
shattering. The second-generation Moto G runs on similar hardware and we
 can say that the performance on it is close to what a user can get with
 the Lumia 640 XL. <br />
<br />
The phone can multitask well and at times we had more than 10 apps opened at the same time. The phone showed no signs of lags. <br />
<br />
In
 the longer run, however, performance could be an issue. Windows 10 will
 be a big update and it will be interesting to see how the phone 
performs. <br />
<br />
In terms of gaming, the quality of the graphics is 
not great. Using the Adreno 305 GPU, the phone offers average gaming 
experience. While there were no major frame rate issues, the quality of 
the graphics was certainly not what you'd expect of a phone costing so 
much. <br />
<br />
Network performance of the phone was fine and we did 
not face many dropped calls while testing the phone. We tested the 
device on a Vodafone network in Delhi NCR. It is also a dual-SIM phone 
with dual active functionality, which makes it more enticing. There's no
 4G LTE support, Microsoft will launch a separate 4G model of the same 
in India. <br />

Battery</h2>

 thing that impressed us the most about the Lumia 640 XL is the battery 
life. The 3,000mAh battery in combination with the rather frugal 
Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU converts to amazing battery life. On an 
average, the phone lasts in-excess of 28-30 hours. </div>

The phone 
never died within the 24 hour period and on one occasion we managed to 
use the phone two days at a stretch. Admittedly, during this 2 day 
stretch we did not use the Facebook app, which is a major source of 
notifications and often keeps a user glued to the screen. <br />
On 
average, our tests included 2 hours of phone calls, 2 email accounts, 2 
social networks, 15-20 photos shot with the phone's camera, 45 minutes 
of music streaming, 30 minutes of web browsing, and around 30 minutes of
 streaming videos on YouTube. We also played games like Asphalt 8 for 
long stretches. <br />

Should you buy it?</h2>

There
 are two ways to look at the Lumia 640 XL. It is a well-designed but 
somewhat underpowered phone. Or you can see it as a device punches above
 its weight despite its more humble hardware. <br />
The performance of 
the Lumia 640 XL is mostly adequate but we still feel hesitant in 
recommending a device with the Snapdragon 400 and 8GB internal storage 
at this price. <br />
<br />
That said, the performance of the 640 XL rear 
camera and battery is superb. In these two areas, no Android phone in 
the price bracket comes close. <br />
<br />
Then there is the Windows 
Phone operating system, which continues to hold back the phone. The apps
 on the OS aren't as good as Android or iOS and many services that are 
loved by users are not available. If you can live without the core 
Google experiences like good Gmail or Chrome experience, then the Lumia 
640 XL will pleasantly surprise you. If not, then you should give it a 
skip. <br />
In nutshell, the Lumia 640 XL is a solid budget phablet
 if you care for camera, battery and basic smartphone functionality. But
 this is not an Android phone and doesn't match the rich experience that
 a similarly-priced Lollipop or KitKat-powered phone can provide.</div>

For many users, stock Android is the purest and best rendition of 
Google's operating system. But apart from the Nexus-branded smartphones,
 it rarely shows up on any flagship smartphones. Manufacturers like to 
modify Android and give it their own unique look and feel before using 
it on their phones. <br />
<br />
Motorola's phones are the only ones that 
buck this trend. More or less, you get pure Android on its phones. But 
most of the Motorola phones are meant for the budget and mainstream 
market. Nexus 6 is an exception. It is made by Motorola and it runs 
stock Android. But it is also too big to be called a smartphone.<br />
<br />
In
 fact, if you want stock Android in a really nice phone, your option 
right now is limited to the Nexus 5. But then that is a phone that came 
out in 2013. <br />
<br />
This is the reason why the Motorola Moto Turbo 
is such an interesting product. Launched recently in India, it is a 
thoroughly high-end phone. It packs the best hardware package found in 
an Android phone with the goodness of stock Android. Does it really 
dazzle? Well, we intend to find that out. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Design and build quality</b></span></i></span><br />

The
 Moto Turbo is different from the Moto X and the Nexus 6. Yet, it shares
 design elements with Motorola's entire portfolio of phones. Like other 
Moto phones, it has a subtly curved back, which makes it easy to hold in
 single hand. But what separates the Turbo from phones like the Moto X 
and the Moto G is the unique material used on the back. It has a back 
cover made of ballistic nylon, which is the same material used in the 
construction of bulletproof vests. It lends the phone a textured fabric 
like feel, which feels nice in hand. It is also very solid. <br />
<br />
The ballistic nylon also adds a degree of water resistance, which is always nice to have. <br />
The
 Turbo is also a quite chubby phone as it measures 11.3mm at its 
thickest point and 8.3mm at its thinnest. But the curve on the back 
masks the fact that phone measures in excess of 11mm, which is really 
thick by modern standards. Though this is a compromise that has been 
made to fit in the massive 3,900mAh battery. The big battery also adds 
weight to the Turbo. Ffor its size, this is a heavy phone at 169 grams. <br />
<br />
The
 phone has capacitive buttons on the front unlike other Motorola phones,
 which we think is a step backwards in terms of usability and design. <br />
<br />
Uniquely,
 the volume keys on the right can be pulled out to access the nano SIM 
slot. While innovative, we were not impressed with the travel on those 
keys and many times we hit the power button instead of the volume 
rockers.<br />
<br />
Motorola has also done a good job of reducing the sides 
of the borders surrounding the screen. The 5.2-inch display on the Moto 
Turbo is flanked by minimal bezels and this helps reduce the overall 
footprint of the device. <br />
<br />
All in all, the phone has a nice design, but it's not going to turn heads the way an iPhone does. <br />

<span style="color: #45818e;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Display </b></span></i></span><br />

 have already stated that the Moto Turbo is bit of a hardware champ. The
 display reflects this. The phone has a 5.2-inch AMOLED display with 2K 
resolution. In fact, the Moto Turbo has the highest pixel density on any
 phone in the market right now. That being true, a display is more than 
its resolution. It is also about contrast ratios, colour fidelity and 
brightness levels. <br />
<br />
The Moto Turbo is good at all those 
parameters, but just not the best. We feel that the Galaxy Note 4 has a 
more vibrant screen than it. <br />
<br />
However, we found the viewing angles to be good and the phone was usable even when we were directly under the sun. <br />

Images,
 videos, and text look good on this screen. It has really deep blacks, 
which is a quality of AMOLED displays. It is just not the best. That 
title is still with the Galaxy Note 4. <br />

The
 Moto Turbo has a 21-megapixel camera on the back, which also flaunts a 
dual-LED flash. It also has a f/2.0 aperture, but unlike the camera in 
the Nexus 6, there's no optical image stabilisation. <br />
<br />
On 
paper, this looks like a great camera but in the real world, it returned
 mixed results. With the Moto Turbo you can shoot some stunning macro 
shots in good lighting as well as some really poor panoramas in the 
evening. Yes, it is this inconsistent. <br />
<br />
A lot of these issues 
could be due to the Motorola camera app, which is not great. It has an 
odd focusing mechanism. If you are used to tap to focus than you will be
 at sea with the Moto Turbo camera app. It will take the shot the moment
 you tap to lock focus. On the Moto Turbo a user needs to drag the focus
 circle, but often it does not lock focus. <br />
<br />
This often is the 
main cause for the mixed camera performance. In terms of colour 
accuracy, the camera is reliable, but in dimly-lit scenes you'll find a 
lot of noise and graininess in the images. <br />
The camera app is 
also built in such a way that it is tailored for people who just want to
 point-and-shoot and want nothing to do with manual settings. Leave 
exposure settings, you don't even get things like ISO and metering. If 
you need more control then perhaps you can look at an app like Camera 
FV-5. <br />
<br />
The rear camera can also shoot 4K video and slow-motion
 videos at 720p. The quality of the videos is decent with the camera 
doing a good job in automatically adjusting the focus. That said the 
audio quality that is captured along with the footage is poor. You 
shouldn't be using this camcorder to create a bootlegged video of a 
concert.<br />
<br />
On the front, there's a 2-megapixel camera. It shoots 
images that have lots of grain and hence is not going to click great 
selfies for you. <br />
<br />
It is not that the Moto Turbo has a 
particularly bad camera. But it is definitely the kind of performance we
 expect from a phone that costs above <span class="rupee">R<span>s.</span></span>40,000.
 Other phones in this price range click much better photos. You will be 
compromising on the camera quality with the Moto Turbo. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Software </b></span></i></span><br />
<br />
One
 of the best things about the Moto Turbo is that you get a phone running
 an almost unadulterated version of Android 5.0.2 Lollipop 
out-of-the-box. This is basically the same experience as you'll get on 
the Nexus 6. This makes the phone's interface look very pretty and 
wicked fast - faster than even an iPhone in terms of navigation. <br />
<br />
You
 also get all the goodness of Google's flamboyant looking 'material 
design' and some Motorola extras. So you get neat additions like the 
Moto Migrate app, the Active display notification system which works in 
tandem with the AMOLED display. You can synchronise your phone with the 
Moto Connect app which allows you to send and receive text messages 
through the Chrome Web Browser on the desktop. <br />
<br />
To summarise, the software on the Tturbo is classic Android Lollipop. It is fast, looks pretty and functional. <br />

 Moto Turbo is the fastest Android phone we have tested. At least it 
feels like that. Yes, it is that good. Though this is on expected lines 
as the phone has the beastly Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 quad-core processor
 clocked at 2.7GHz inside it. There is 3GB RAM and 64GB of internal 
memory. <br />
Opening apps and scrolling is lag-free on the Turbo. 
The phone multitasks like a champ. We had more than 20 apps open at one 
point and we saw no sign of lag.<br />
<br />
 The phone is absolutely blistering and 
even compared to the iPhone 6 it keeps up. It can be argued that it is 
faster than the iPhone 6 in navigation thanks to the faster animations 
on Android Lollipop. <br />
<br />
Even for gaming, the phone is very good.
 It leverages the Adreno 420 GPU and performance with games like Dead 
Trigger 2 and Shadowgun is top notch. Frame rate drops were few and far 
in between and generally the graphics of the games were better than what
 we could see on the devices like the OnePlus One, which uses the older 
Adreno 330 GPU. <br />
<br />
Once, when we were stress testing the phone 
with video games it got uncomfortably hot. But strangely that happened 
only once. In the subsequent test, even when we tried to replicate the 
earlier, we found the phone perfectly cool and fine. <br />
<br />
Call 
quality in Delhi area on a Vodafone network was solid. We faced only one
 dropped call during our test period, and that was probably due to the 
network issues and not the phone related problem. <br />
Unlike most
 phones in its segment, the Moto Turbo lacks 4G support for India. 
Though currently 4G is not all that well available in India, support for
 it would've definitely made the Turbo a better phone. <br />

reasons why someone will buy the Moto Turbo. Largely, it fulfils the 
promise of being a roadrunner. Unlike most phones in the market, you can
 use the Moto Turbo well in to the second day on a single charge. <br />

On
 average, the Moto Turbo will last you anything between 28-32 hours 
under medium to heavy usage. These figures are very impressive. Using 
Motorola's charger, the phone can also charge pretty quickly. It can 
reach the 50 per cent mark within the hour, though for a full charge the
 phone can take as long as 3 hours. <br />
<br />
Our usage while testing 
the battery included two email accounts, two social media accounts, 25 
minutes of YouTube, 45 minutes of music streaming while on commute and 
15-20 photographs in a day. We also played games with the phone for 30 
minutes. <br />

onboard storage. <br />

Should you dump Android for iPhone 6, iOS 8? No, not at all

It
 is year 2014 but the latest iPhones, which will be among the expensive 
smartphones in India once they launch here, still come with 1GB RAM. 
This is the same amount of RAM that Android One phones, launched a few 
days ago with a price of around <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>6,000, have. Even phones like Micromax Canvas Nitro that cost around <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>12,000 have 2GB RAM.<br />
But
 the argument is that amount of RAM doesn't matter in an iPhone. The iOS
 doesn't require a lot of RAM, unlike Android which is incredibly memory
 hungry. And this argument is somewhat correct.<br />
iOS is much better
 and efficient at utilising RAM. But that is until you are not pushing 
the phone. Once you open 12 tabs in the Chrome for iOS, it starts 
running out of memory. Have you seen an iPhone refresh an opened tab in a
 browser as soon as you start juggling between a few open apps or tabs? 
This happens because iPhones have just 1GB RAM. Irrespective of how 
efficient an OS is, there are instances, especially when a user is 
multitasking, when it needs more RAM.<br />
Multi-tab web browsing is better on high-end Android phones because they have at least 2GB RAM.<br />
<b><br /><span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">Android phones are cheaper</span></i></span></b><br />
<br />
When the iPhones launch in the coming weeks in India, in all probability they are going to sport a price tag of more than <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>50,000. In comparison, you can pick the Nexus 5 or Galaxy S5 for less than <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>35,000
 and get a fantastic user experience which is in some way slightly 
better and in some ways slightly inferior to the iPhone experience. It 
is win some and lose some scenario. With the remaining <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>20,000,
 you can book a ticket to goa and have a 4-day holiday on a sea beach. 
Don't you think a Nexus 5 plus a 4-day holiday in Goa is a better deal 
than the iPhone 6?<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Choices, many choices</b></span></i></span><br />
<br />
With 
iPhones, you get everything in one package. It does many things very 
well, but what if you have special needs? Want a high-end phone that can
 last 20 hours a day? Get the LG G2 that sells for around <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>30,000.
 Want a phone that has really solid set of speakers? Get the HTC One 
(M8). Want a phone that has fantastic integration with a stylus? Get the
 Samsung Galaxy Note 3. (Or rather don't get the Note 3. Wait for the 
Note 4 that should be in India in the coming few weeks. It will be even 
more awesome).<br />
Want a phone that has a removable battery or 
supports microSD cards? Get an Android phone. Want a phone that can use 
Bluetooth or NFC for file transfer? Get an Android phone.<br />
<span style="color: #351c75;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Android KitKat (and upcoming Android L) are awesome</b></span></i></span><br />
<br />
In
 many ways, iOS 8 is sort of a catch up release for Android. The 
software that powers iPhones had fallen so much behind in terms of 
functionality that Apple had no option but to open up the iOS and add 
more functionality to it. Hence, iOS 8 allows users to install 
third-party keyboards. Or has 'extensibility' that app developers can 
use to make their apps more functional. It even has widgets but they 
don't match the functionality of widgets found on Android phones.<br />
Yet,
 Android KitKat still does so many things in a better way. Some of these
 really affect user experience in a big way. These are:<br />
<b><span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">-- </span><span style="font-size: large;">Sharing feature:</span></i></span></b><br />
<br />
<b><span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></i></span> </b>On
 an Android phone, you can share content and data within apps with ease.
 That is why you can share a tweet from a Twitter app using WhatsApp 
easily. In iOS 8 Apple has provided a limited sharing functionality that
 app developers can use but so far it is not clear how well it will work
 and how many app developers are going to use it. Android is still 
better in this aspect.<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><b><span style="font-size: large;">-- (Almost) Open File System:</span></b></i></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><b><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></b></i></span>Want 
to control how files are arranged on your phone, install an app like ES 
File Explorer on your Android phone and enjoy the ability to copy and 
paste any file almost anywhere. You can also create folders, arrange 
content the way you want and manually assign different apps to handle 
different kind of files.<br />
<b><span style="color: #351c75;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">-- </span><span style="font-size: large;">Drag and drop your content from your computer into phone:</span></i></span> </b><br />
<br />
<b> </b>On
 the iPhones, you can only drag and drop photos clicked with the iPhone 
camera. For everything else you have to deal with iTunes, which is a 
cumbersome way of doing things. On an Android phone, connect your device
 to a computer and you can drag and drop documents, photos, songs and 
music with ease. Plain and simple.  <br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><b><span style="font-size: large;">-- Google apps rock in Android:</span></b></i></span><br />

<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><b><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></b></i></span>
 If you use Google apps a lot, Android phones provide the best Google 
experience on mobile phones. This is especially true of the Nexus 5 that
 comes with the Google Now launcher, which puts a lot of relevant 
information just a swipe away. Even the Gmail, Google Maps and Photos 
experience is better on a flagship Android phone.<br />
<i><b><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #0b5394;">-- Customise, customise, customise:</span> </span></b></i><br />
<br />
<i><b><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></b></i> You can't customise an iPhone. Well, you can change the wallpaper, but 
that is hardly a big deal. Android phones can be customized in tens of 
different ways.  Don't like the shape and colour of app icons? Change 
them. Don't like how notifications show up on the lockscreen? Change it 
using a third-party app? Want widgets? Get the fancy ones from the play 
store. Want fancy user interface animations, install a different 
launcher. You can use one theme on an Android phone for one week and 
then once you are bored of it, change it to something else.<br />
If you
 are a user who likes to tinker with the theme and software of his or 
her phone, you can't go wrong with Android. The iPhone, even the one 
running iOS 8, doesn't even come close.<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394;"><i><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Let's summarise</b></span></i></span><br />
<br />
The
 iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are pretty good smartphones. The iPhone 
experience costs a lot of money but it is also pretty good experience. 
Camera in an iPhone is always fantastic. Performance is mostly nice. 
Apps are plenty and good looking. But the real beneficiaries of the 
iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are the existing iPhone users. Now they 
have a choice to get a big-screen phone running an OS they like.<br />
But
 if you already have a flagship Android phone and like it, there is not 
much new in the iPhone 6 or the iPhone 6 Plus for you. Your Android 
phone is still great and Android OS is still a more dynamic, flexible 
and useful operating system.</div>

Motorola's new Moto E aka the Moto E (2nd generation) would launch in
 India in the coming days. The likely date is March 10. We will have 
more to say about the device once it is here in India. But while that 
will take some days, we checked out the device at the Mobile World 
Congress in Barcelona and we can give you a rough idea of what you can 
expect from the new Moto E.<br />
In terms of looks and design, the new 
Moto E is not all that different from the older model. But the build 
quality seems slightly better. The finishing is better and the plastic 
used to make the shell of the device has a better feel to it. The new 
Moto E is slightly bigger - but has the same 12.3mm thick body. The 
difference between the old and new Moto E is so marginal in terms of 
dimensions that it is not going to be apparent to the users. The new one
 fits in hands as effortlessly as the old one, largely because of the 
well-rounded shape and subtly curved back.<br />

 changes between the new and old Moto E are in the hardware. The new one
 comes with a bigger screen - 4.5-inch compared to the 4.3-inch - though
 resolution remains the same 540p. This gives the new Moto E slightly 
less dense pixel pitch if you go by numbers but in during actual use, it
 is not noticeable. In fact, the new Moto E has a better screen. It 
shows punchier colours and has better viewing angles. This is almost in 
class of the Moto G screen, although we feel the brightness is still 
less than optimal. But considering the price the new Moto E is going to 
carry, we feel that it will be a compromise we can make.<br />
The 
performance is another aspect where the difference is very much 
apparent. The new Moto E, at least for daily use, is going to be as fast
 as any other Android phones. During the brief time we spent with it, we
 didn't notice any lag, dropped frames, freezes, missed swipe etc on the
 new Moto E. Apps open quickly, the scrolling is smooth, and switching 
between tasks is effortless.<br />
Obviously much of this is because of 
the improved hardware in the phone. The Moto E that we tried was running
 Qualcomm's Snapdragon 410 processor, though in India, the company is 
likely to launch the one with the Snapdragon 400 processor (3G version) 
to replace the old Moto E. But much of it is also because of the Android
 Lollipop.<br />

 is using an almost unmodified version of Android Lollipop aka pure 
Android on the Moto E. This means almost all Lollipop features, 
including app drawer with white background is available on the new Moto 
E. This is also a surprise because the old Moto G, which has hardware 
very similar to the new Moto E, did not get these Lollipop user 
interface features.<br />
There is much more to Moto E than design and 
performance. For example, we know nothing about its actual battery life,
 camera performance and network performance etc. We will explore these 
details in our review of the phone when the device is available in 
India. But for now we can say that the new Moto E looks like a worthy 
upgrade to the India's most popular budget phone of 2014. For more, stay

Whether you are in the actual ocean or in a virtual world, when a 
mighty blue whale lazily swims over you and flicks its tail, you duck. 
There is no other way to react to it, even though when you are in the 
virtual world you know that you are the master of your universe.<br />
This
 is what I realised when I was standing on a virtual shipwreck at the 
bottom of the ocean, as a blue whale and stingrays swam around me. The 
scene is from one of the demos that HTC was giving with Vive, its 
virtual reality headgear, to select journalists and technology bloggers 
at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. It also showcases the incredible 
potential that the virtual reality has and the opportunities that 
products like Vive have in the market in the coming months.<br />
For 
now Vive is in beta stage. In fact, the hardware is at such an early 
stage of the development that it is not yet available to even 
developers. But it is a promising - no, make it extremely promising - 
product. Built by HTC using the virtual reality technology of Valve, the
 influential gaming developer, the Vive is arguably one of the best 
implementation of virtual reality we have seen so far. In many cases it 
is better than the much praised virtual-reality headsets made by Oculus,
 a Facebook-owned company. Though in some cases, it also seems inferior.<br />
It is also a lot different from other virtual reality headsets.<br />

Unlike
 the other virtual reality headsets, which hope to bring the richly 
detailed virtual world to consumers with the help of one headset, the 
Vive is built using a unique approach. It is not exactly a headset. It 
is a system, a system that involves using a small room, a few 
wall-mounted modules that throw laser beams, a powerful computer, a few 
wireless game controllers, a headphone, a virtual-reality headsets and 
lots of sensors.<br />
The resulting product is something that offers incredible virtual reality experience.<br />
<br />
At
 MWC, HTC showed five demos with Vive, with the last one being a totally
 mind-blowing experience involving a smartass robot. Once a user has put
 on the headset, headphone and has grabbed the controllers, the Vive 
system creates a virtual room. In this room physical walls are 
represented with a wired fence. Then, the virtual environment is created
 around your vision.<br />
In the first demo I found myself standing on a
 ship that probably went under the water a long long time ago. The ship 
railings had rust and mold on them, fish came out of nooks and corners 
and stingrays were floating above me. I moved around the ship - actually
 room - to explore it. It was all nice and beautiful, with sharp enough 
textures and good colours. It was like being inside a movie, or 
exploring the depth of ocean in an air bubble. The wow moment came when 
the blue whale appeared on my left. Just a little beyond my reach, it 
swam. It went around the old ship, from left to right, moved a little up
 in the water and then flicked its tail. Wow! Gorgeous animal and one 
mind-blowing moment.<br />

 the second demo, I was placed in a virtual kitchen. A lot of items were
 on the kitchen shelf and I could manipulate them. During my brief stay 
in this kitchen, a voice whispered in my ear that I could try to make 
soup. Unfortunately, omelette is all that I can cook so no (but nice try
 kitchen AI). But I played with the kitchen items and by the time demo 
ended, I had to managed to put tomatoes in a pot that was on the gas 
burner, break a knife, topple a few books on culinary, heat up something
 in the oven and throw a few utensils here and there.<br />
The third 
demo was something where I was just a spectator. But that doesn't mean 
it was boring. There was a war going on between two armies - it was like
 a strategy game with miniature soldiers and tiny planes - on a tablet 
and I was standing in middle of the tablet. The warring armies were 
oblivious to my presence and they continued unabated while I saw the 
tiny planes crash after being hit by rockets and small soldiers vanish 
in a puff of smoke when the bullets pierced them.<br />
In the fourth 
demo I was given a virtual brush. The task was simple: Use the brush and
 draw stuff in the air. By the time this demo finished there were a 
number of brush strokes floating in front of me, all their full virtual 
3D brilliance.  <br />
But it was the fifth demo that really showed 
the full potential of the Vive. For this demo, I was placed in a robot 
repair facility. Now, those of you who are familiar with Valve will 
realise that the the company has a special affinity to virtual robots. 
Yes, I am talking about the Portal video game where robots are friends 
as well as foes. The Portal is set around the fictional lab managed by 
fictional company Aperture Science. The lab is largely controlled by 
GLaDOS, an artificial intelligence (AI), entity with a wry humour and a 
tendency to play pranks.<br />

 the demo, I was supped to fix a broken robot. First, AI, probably 
working under GLaDOS, spewed out some commands a a rapid pace. i felt 
like a new employee who had no skills and was all at sea in the new 
office. As I completed the tasks, the AI said I was slow learner and 
this robot repair thing was not going to work out. Still, I was given a 
chance to repair the robot. A hatch opened, and a robot - P-Body from 
Portal game - which was nursing some broken parts stood up and walked 
towards me to enter the repair chamber. Next, the repairman had to open 
the front portion of the robot and look for a button that would fix the 
poor thing. But as soon as the front portion opened, I was told by the 
smartass UI that I had three minutes to fix it all or else Mr P-body 
would self-destruct.<br />
Of course, that's how the simulation was 
designed. Soon, three minutes were up and the poor robot saw its parts 
falling on the ground. It tried to stand up and keep the posture but 
soon it was down on the floor, which then disappeared.<br />
This is 
when GLaDOS appeared. She then chided me for the destruction of the 
robot repair chamber. Ordered it to be fixed and then rambled about how 
humans were fit for nothing. She said that when she heard of the plan to
 allow humans to repair robots, she was concerned because she had doubts

 was the end of the demo and I had my jaw on the floor. around a year 
ago, I had tried Oculus's virtual reality headset. Since then Oculus has
 improved its product. But compare to that experience one year ago, I 
feel the Vive is in a different league. It is so much better. First of 
all, it is a full body virtual reality environment. Second, the 
atmosphere it can create is so much more detailed and rich. There are no
 poor frame rates and the virtual scenes feel as real as the gang 
environment created on powerful computers nowadays.<br />
Of course, we 
still don't know so many things about the Vive. The technology is still 
new, is likely expensive. There are no clear datelines about the 
availability of the product as well as content for it. But after 
spending some 15 odd minutes with it, we can say that it has great 
potential to change the world around us, in so many ways.</div>
