WhatsApp calling feature is gradually reaching out to more and more 
Android users. It is not yet officially available but almost daily there
 is a window open when someone with the feature can call other WhatsApp 
users and pass it on to them.<br />
<br />
There are other apps like Viber, 
Skype, Line etc that offer similar functionality. But the calling 
feature in WhatsApp has potential to be a game-changer. It is also 
likely to bring down your phone bill significantly, whether telecom 
operators like it or not. But the question is, how cheap these WhatsApp 
calls are going to be? Of course, a lot will depend on the network you 
are using. For example a Wi-Fi that has unlimited internet bandwidth or 
for which you are not paying the calls are going to be virtually free. 
But if you are using cellular data connection, it is going to cost you 
some money, which again depends on the data charges that your operator 
is asking for.<br />
<br />
But just to give you an idea of what is going to be
 the cost of WhatsApp calls, we used the feature with Airtel 3G in 
Delhi. Here is what we found.<br />

We made three calls -- one ISD, one 
STD, and one local. Of course, with internet calls it doesn't matter 
where you are connecting to. All calls -- local, STD, ISD -- are same. 
We spoke for 15 minutes and for those 15 minutes the WhatsApp on our 
phone consumed around 12MB data.<br />
This means:<br />

-- If you are 
paying regular charges for data on a prepaid Airtel connection, 15 
minutes of WhatsApp calls will cost you: Around <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>50.<br />
<br />
This
 is based on the standard data charges -- 4 paisa per 10KB -- from 
Airtel that are exorbitantly high. This means with these charges you pay
 over <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>4 for 1MB and that translates to nearly <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>50 for 12MB data.<br />
<br />
However, these are the data charges that most people don't pay. Instead, they subscribe to a data plan.<br />
-- So if you are using a data plan, to do a rough calculation we assume you are using Airtel's 1GB per month plan that costs <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>250, for 15 minutes of WhatsApp calls you will pay: Less than <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>3.<br />
<br />
With
 the 1GB plan you are paying less than 25 paisa for 1MB of data that you
 consume. This means for 4MB you pay little less than <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>1 and for 12MB, the cost is going to be less than <span class="rupee">Rs.</span>3.<br />

This
 means even for local calls, if you use WhatsApp calling feature it will
 save you money. As far as ISD and STD are concerned, well unless the 
calling feature is implemented by WhatsApp team really badly, there will
 not be any financial incentive for you to use the cellular service to

Here's some really good news coming for all the iOS users out there. 
WhatsApp cofounder Brian Acton has come out and said on record that 
voice calling feature on the popular instant messaging service will be 
coming to the iOS platform in a couple of weeks. The VoIP feature has 
been available on the Android platform for almost two weeks now.<br />
<br />
Acton
 was speaking on a panel at Facebook's F8 developers' conference where 
he made the said announcement. Also present on the stage were Instagram 
cofounder Mike Krieger and Facebook Messenger chief David Marcus.<br />
<br />
According
 to Acton, WhatsApp has been refining and iterating the VoIP feature for
 almost a year now before making it available for Android. It will be 
launching for iOS in a couple weeks. <br />
While Android users have 
been using the feature for quite some time now, Apple iOS users have 
been patiently waiting for WhatsApp to make the feature official for

There are of course unofficial ways to get the feature up 
and running on iOS, but users need to jailbreak their iPhones to make 
that happen. Screenshot of the implementation were recently leaked out 
giving some idea about how the iOS interface of the WhatsApp calling 
feature would look like. The leaked screenshot showed a jailbroken 
iPhone running WhatsApp version 2.11.17.444 beta.<br />
<br />
It must be 
however noted that currently WhatsApp version 2.11.16 is available for 
the iOS, meaning that the said feature will more likely be part of a 
future iOS update. </div>

WhatsApp's new calling feature is like a unicorn.  Everyone seems to 
want it though its sporadic invite/call based roll-out ensures that 
everyone is not appeased.  However, that is set to change as the 
Facebook owned instant messaging service is now rolling out a new build 
of the app â€” 2.11.561 â€” on the Google Play store for Android 
devices, which is enabling the feature for all.<br />

There are a few 
caveats to the activation of the calling feature. You still need an 
invite to enable it. The invite is quite plain and simple â€” A call is 
needed from a person, who has the feature enabled. <br />
 Once you receive a call from a person with the feature you also get the feature.<br />

 addition to this, there is some good news for them iPhone users as 
well. BGR India, which is technology website, is reporting that the 
company is reading an update for the iPhone that will enable calling. 
The report has a screenshot of the feature, which has been allegedly 
grabbed from a beta tester of version 2.11.17.444. <br />
<br />
This update 
brings few minor tweaks to the user interface of the iPhone app. 
Importantly, when a user makes a call from the standard call button 
inside a contact, the user is diverted to a WhatsApp call. The call 
screen clearly spells this out. Earlier, users were diverted to standard
 cellular calls. There's also a recent button, which catalogs all your 
WhatsApp calls.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile; if you're on Android then just follow 
the aforementioned steps to enable the function.  That being true, it is
 not exactly a life changer. Viber, and Skype are better at the moment 
in our opinion.  </div>

WhatsApp is a great app. It is fast, easy to use and a convenient to stay in touch with people now that almost everyone uses it.<br />

 of late, WhatsApp has added a number of features that makes it a 
privacy risk. If you are not careful, it is even easy to figure out your
 daily moment and activity from the information that is displayed on 
your WhatsApp profile. In some cases, a person doesn't even have to chat
 with you. All he or she needs to stalk to you is your phone number.<br />

So how do you ward off the stalkers and weirdos or just plain irritants? Well, there are some very simple steps:<br />

numbers of people who are irritating you. To block a contact, open the 
chat window for that particular contact, tap on the "three dots" on the 
top right, select "more" and select "block". If you think the person 
deserves forgiveness, you can unblock him or her later.<br />

 On WhatsApp anyone can see your profile photo. To change this click on 
the "three dots" in the main WhatsApp  window and select "settings". In 
the next window, select "account" and then "privacy".<br />

section "Who can see my personal info", select "Profile photo" and set 
the setting to "Nobody" if you are really paranoid or annoyed at 
strangers complimenting you, or "my contacts" if you don't mind some of 
your friends seeing your profile photo from time to time.<br />

 Hiding "last seen" is one single biggest step you can take to safeguard
 your privacy on WhatsApp. In the same, "Who can see my personal info", 
select "Last seen" and then choose the option that you want.<br />

Similarly, you can also hide status message from strangers or from 
everyone. Though if you want to hide it from everyone, you can just use a
 blank status message. That will do the same thing.<br />

 A few months ago, WhatsApp added this read receipt feature which shows a
 user when the message has been read by turning the two grey ticks to 
blue. While it is a useful feature, it also takes away a bit of freedom 
you have in how and when you respond to messages from others. Once you 
have seen a message and once the sender of that message knows it, there 
is an obvious pressure on you to respond. <br />
To turn off the Blue 
Ticks feature, go to section "Messaging" in the Privacy window. Clear 
the "Read receipt" selection or in other words uncheck it.<br />
<br />
<b>What if you are using an iPhone</b><br />
<br />
The
 above mentioned tips are for WhatsApp on Android. But what if you are 
using it on an iPhone? Well, in that case you can access the privacy 
settings by clicking on the gearwheel placed on the bottom right of the 
WhatsApp window.<br />
However, on iPhone it seems WhatsApp doesn't 
allow turning off the blue ticks. It can be done but then for that you 
have to "jailbreak" the iPhone. But you can change other settings.<br />
